Five Minute Freewrite: The Other Counter

For some days now Emma has been feeling dizzy. He attributed it to lack of adequate sleep for two days owing to the number of topics he needs to cover for his promotional exams. He had to read into the night to cover lost grounds. Schooling and working ain't an easy thing really.

As he woke up in the morning to prepare for work the dizziness couldn't even allow him to rise up from the bed this time around. He went back to sleep. And having rested for about an hour with no signs of improvement he realized that this must be malaria knocking the door.

Slowly he rose up, got dressed and managed to stagger out of his apartment. Luckily for him he got a waiting cab which took him to a nearby clinic. A quick test was run and it shows that Emma has malaria. That was not surprising to him anyway.

As he was waiting for the drug prescriptions he reached out for his cellphone and called the head of admin in his office and informed him that he won't be in the office today owing to the bouts of malaria which he has started treating.

Soon his prescriptions arrived and he had to move to the other counter to pay for them. The queue was much. Most patients were paying with cash. Emma who has been weak all these while reached out for his cellphone again and did a transfer of the amount quoted for his medicine. The cashier confirmed the payment.

Emma had to leave there to another counter where his medicine will be dispensed for him. While at this other counter he saw his colleague who has been watching him all these while without Emma knowing.

"So you are not at work, Emma", he said.

Emma simply gave him a smile and responded in a low tone, "what brought you here is also the reason why am not at work". Both colleagues laughed and Emma took delivery of his medicine and went away.

Excuse my ignorance, but is malaria contagious? COVID is going around here, and it upsets me to see sick people out in public places. My sister has it and has been out and around others. Her daughter's family had it, and she said she was safe because she wore her mask around them and washed her hands. Now she has been sick for over a week.

No my dear, malaria is not contagious in the traditional sense. It is however transmitted through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Sorry to hear about the issues with COVID-19. Please stay safe and observe the necessary protocols please.
