Taeko-chan in the Safflower Farm (a Ghibli fan art)

My mom @arashi0416 has been re-watching some of her favorite Ghibli films these days, and she's been active in the community recently. Last night, we rewatched a Ghibli film together called "Only Yesterday". I think she's going to review it one of these days, so I decided to make a fan art.

I really like the beautiful scenery in that movie. It made me want to live in the countryside again. Anyway, here's what I painted a while ago.

I was thinking about painting either a scenery or a landscape from the movie, or the main character... so, I decided to combine them! This was a scene when the main character Taeko, was picking some safflower from the farm.

It's a nice scene to paint, though my favorite scene would still be the pineapple scene. XD (You'll know when you're familiar with this movie.)

Anyway, let me share some of the progress shots or the painting process below. Also, for this artwork, I used poster paints on a 10 x 10 cm watercolor paper. Let's start!

I did a pencil sketch first before coloring. I also had to erase it lightly, so it won't be too messy to look at.

I started coloring with the background first. I just used various mixtures of blue and green, as well as some shades of green. I made different shapes of mountains, trees and bushes.

Then, I painted her clothes. :) I just used violet, then added white to create a variety of shades. It's a farmer's outfit! ^^

Then, I painted her face and facial features. She has huge eyes. hahah

Then, I did the safflowers as well as the background. I'm done with the painting part. This time, I decided to outline her and the flowers using a gel pen. And here's how it looked.

Outlining only her and the flowers emphasized them more than the rest of the painting. :)

It's all done! After taking off the masking tape, I wrote the usual stuff: username, signature and the date today. :)

I took some more photos of it. It's tiny... It's a great way to focus and train my hands not to get very shaky. haha Lastly, here's a selfie with the tiny painting. :)

Thanks for reading and checking this post out! See you around! (^^,)/

Taeko looks so cute here and your lines are so clean even with poster paint — amazing!

I used a gel pen for the outline. I didn't have much time to paint earlier. :) Anyway, thanks! ^^

Ah, I see! The gel pen really made the details stand out, especially with the clean lines. You did an awesome job even with the time crunch — still looks amazing!

Is it underrated? Or too old? Because I've never heard of this anime. Btw great drawing, I'm still learning to draw and yours look beautiful 🥰🌷

It was released in 1991... not sure if it's underrated, but maybe because it wasn't directed by Hayao Miyazaki, it's not as famous as the others. Thank you! ^^

Yes, that could be a reason.
