Recent Game, Risky Play in Blitz

Mate in 3

The above position was from my recent game in lichess.org 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4 h6 { B16 Caro-Kann Defense: Finnish Variation } I have been playing this line to avoid the main line of the Caro-Kann and to surprise my opponent in blitz.

The game continued 5. h4 [The push h4-h5 will not work because my Bishop will retreat to h7 instead of g6 in the mainline. That's the point of h6] 5. ...Bf5 6. Ng3 Bh7

With this 4. ...h6 line, Black gains a tempo 7. Nf3 e6 8. Bd3 Bxd3 9. Qxd3 Nd7 10. h5 Ngf6 11. c3 Bd6 12. Ne4 Nxe4 13. Qxe4 Nf6 14. Qd3 Qc7 15. Bd2 a5

White cannot castle on the King side because his h5 pawn will hang so I pushed my a pawn to soften his Queen side. 16. O-O-O a4 17. Rde1 a3 18. b3 O-O 19. g4 Nxg4

A risky decision to open up the g file but I cannot allow g5. 20. Reg1 Nxf2

Black is grabbing too much material and tempting White to find the refutation. It's not easy to do in a blitz game. 21. Qe3 Nxh1

White's attack looks dangerous after 21. Qe3 threatening Qxh6. I spent some time to find the correct defense after White moved Qe3. 22. Qxh6 Ng3

There it is. Ng3 shuts the g file and White's attack fizzles. 23. Qg5 f6 24. Qg4 Nf5

I missed Ne2+ forking the rook but I moved quickly trying to catch up with my opponent up by 30 seconds on the clock. 25. Nh4 Rae8 26. Nxf5 exf5 27. Qxf5 Re2 28. h6 Rf7 29. Qh5 Rxd2 30. Kxd2 Bf4+ 31. Kc2 Bg5

Cute way to close the g file again. 32. h7+ Kh8 33. Re1 Re7 34. Rf1 Qg3 35. Rf3

And now the position above is reached. Black to win by checkmate 35. ...Qg2+ 36. Kd3 Qe2# { Black wins by checkmate. } 0-1
