Walk to the Airport?! .:. BuzzParty Hamburg 2024 Wednesday Walk

Do you remember that I said that I didn't take too many photos during my visit to Hamburg this year? Well, it looks like I did, but most of them when I was strolling around the city alone... Whenever we would go somewhere in the group, I would forget to take photos as I would be busy talking with Hivians... :)

01.jpg

As almost everyone left on the last day of the #BuzzParty2024 event, I had another day to explore the city as my flight was the next day! The part of this walk I took with @edje, as he had his train on the same day, but a few hours before my flight...

02.jpg

So, we went from a hotel to the penultimate metro station to the main train station, to stretch our legs and to check out the city together... He had half an hour free, so we went to have a coffee... On the way there we saw some important buildings, which I had no idea which is which, so I had to open Google Maps, find the place where I was, to "re-create" this walk... πŸ˜ƒ

03.jpg

What you can see in the photo above is Rathausmarkt (Town Hall Market), which, according to Google reviews, looks awesome around Christmas with all the Christmas lights and decorations!

04.jpg

For example, I had no idea that this building was a Stock Exchange building!

05.jpg

06.jpg

Huh... It is extremely hard to "re-create" the route where we went to the main train station as we were pretty lost and probably walking in zig-zag... lol... I just remembered that I had to take a photo of this cute building, but when I search OMEN, it shows a place on the street view that was renovated at the moment when a Google car (or person) passed by... Anyway, it is probably that one... :)

07.jpg

When I said farewell to @edje, I took a last photo of the train station, and headed toward the airport! I'm not sure that anyone had the brilliant idea (like I had that day) to go to the airport on foot!!! Usually, airports are outside the city, but when I checked the map, it said that it is reachable by walking! It wasn't a small distance, but I gave it a go!

08.jpg

09.jpg

10.jpg

The motivation to give it a go for this walk was words from @tibfox, where he said that the lake is worth visiting, but I suppose he didn't expect that I would go around the lake... lol... Anyway, the route from the main train station to the airport was around 10km or around 2.5 hours of walking! I had another headache, so walking in the fresh air was very pleasant and something that I needed!

11.jpg

12.jpg

13.jpg

I was lucky as a nice chunk of the route went on the banks of the lake, so I have even had a chance to see some "wildlife", like this duck with small ducklings!!!

14.jpg

15.jpg

16.jpg

The weather was perfect, not too cold, not too hot... There were many bridges like this one, where water from the lake would penetrate the city... It reminded me of Amsterdam and #HiveFest in 2022!

17.jpg

18.jpg

19.jpg

Another interesting view was these buildings that were surrounded by water from 3 sides, "acting" as small peninsulas! Living in the part of Spain where we almost have no rain, seeing this much greenery was a delightful view!

20.jpg

21.jpg

After taking a short break to have breakfast/lunch, I continued my walk toward the airport... Another great surprise was to see an amazing huge park, and my route was crossing through it!! I didn't expect that I would have this kind of trail on my way to the airport! It looks like a proper forest!

22.jpg

23.jpg

Someone in the middle of the park, there was a Planetarium! On the other side, a huge open space with a small swimming lake in the distance!

24.jpg

25.jpg

26.jpg

27.jpg

Check out the map to see how many interesting places are inside this park!

28.jpg

29.jpg

30.jpg

31.jpg

When I left the park, I found myself on the Hamburg streets, which again, didn't look like big city streets! It was a peaceful residential area, and on the right side (photo under), hidden from the green trees and bush, was the main road to the airport!

32.jpg

33.jpg

34.jpg

This photo is one of the rare photos that I took where you can see something that you can expect from the road toward the airport... Car dealers, offices, airport hotels, etc.

35.jpg

36.jpg

37.jpg

And after a few steps, I was again inside the residential area and a park at the end of it... Believe it or not, this part was a 5 to 10-minute walk from my goal! Where are those planes? πŸ˜ƒ

38.jpg

39.jpg

40.jpg

Okay, the radar is there, so the airport should be close...

Hamburg airport.jpg
Screenshot from GoogleMaps phone app

There is my proof that I did the route and that I didn't cheat... πŸ˜‚

41.jpg

42.jpg

A few steps from an overpass, and Terminal 2, of Hamburg airport was there!!

43.jpg

44.jpg

Found my gate, went through the airport control, "smuggling" rock candies, and I was ready to board my plane!!!

45.jpg

Did you ever take a walk to the airport? I would like to hear that someone else did it just to rectify my crazy idea... πŸ˜ƒ I hope you liked this long walk... I had over 100 photos from it, but I had to shrink it to under 50... πŸ˜ƒ

Thank you for your time.

I remember, it was March 2018.
We had a flight to Malta.
Since we are geeks and don't like to be tight on time, we always leave for the airport a little earlier than anyone else would πŸ™‚
it's better for me to sit at the terminal for an hour and wait for check-in than to worry about being late somewhere along the way (although, there were also such situations, when we barely made it to check-in...).
and so, quite early, we take a taxi to the airfield. I accept the suggestion of the taxi driver (who happens to be an acquaintance of mine), that we take the ring road and not through the city, as there are some works on the highway...
And before the exclusion for the airport, a traffic accident. And a long line.
We stand in line, 15 minutes, 20 minutes pass.
we didn't wait to sit for half an hour, we took our suitcases out of the car and started walking to the airport. We didn't make a mistake, an acquaintance told me later, he waited in his lap for more than an hour and a half.
If we had stayed in the car, we would have had a time crunch again. Like this, we walked for half an hour and were at the check-in just when we were supposed to be.

Huh... When I have to catch a plane or train, I always have a fear that my car will not start, or that some traffic jam will happen... I'm doing similar to you, go to the airport an hour earlier (or more)... But, I have to admit that as time passes by, I'm narrowing that time... getting more comfortable with it, until I have something like you did... πŸ˜ƒ

Smart decision. I lived in Malta so I know how terrible the traffic can get in there. Fortunately, we lived on Gozo that is actually small enough to walk pretty much anywhere :)

We had a nice trip to Gozo πŸ˜€
We were located in Sliema, and we went from the airport by public bus, 2.5 hours of driving through those narrow streets πŸ˜…

You are a machine to walk this haha

Amazing post and very beautiful images you've captured along the way :) There are so many beautiful places in Hamburg- glad you've seen some more <3

Despite not feeling 100% well, I enjoyed that walk a lot! If I hadn't done the walk, I wouldn't have realized how beautiful parts of the city are! I bet that many people who are living in the city center aren't even aware of such parts!

Thanks for your suggestion to visit the lake!

Man, you must be one of the most active participants of all meet ups Hive :) I didnΒ΄t even know about this one in Hamburg. But happy for you, any meet up with fellow Hivers is a nice experience :)

So you walked to the airport? ThatΒ΄s cool! As far as I remember, I did this once too. It was on the Azorean island of Sao Miguel, in the capital city Ponta Delgada where we lived back then in 2020. Although capital, the town is actually very small and the public transport is almost non existent in there so I could either take a taxi or walk. So I walked :) It looked like a nice and enjoyable route on the map but there were some construction works right in front of the airport so it was eventually longer than I thought and I almost missed the flight :D

Hey, that was the same meetup from 2 months ago! I didn't go again to Hambuegr... :) But, it is true that I like them and would probably go even more often if there were flights and cheap accommodations... πŸ˜‚

Woohooo! I'm not the craziest guy in the world! Thanks for the comment! Now I'm motivated to repeat the same thing in some other city!

I hope I will not have a construction site on my route... πŸ˜ƒ

What a nice that it was with the sun out and about. No grey in the sky. And this walk, wow! Hamburg from a different angle. I never ever walked to a commercial airport in my whole life. Not sure if I ever will, but when a get back to Hamburg, I may use the feet. Uhm, perhaps I shall try this in Amsterdam. I suppose a kinda similar distance from my house to the airport. Nah, the tram and train is perfect for such travel. Downside is: no post material for Wednesday Walk when not using the feet. Some nice still images, btw! πŸŽΆπŸ™‚

We were lucky that day! It got worse in the late afternoon, but I was already at the airport in those moments! πŸ˜ƒ

Hahahahahaha... I like your "discussions with myself" and dropping the idea in 1 minute... πŸ˜‚

Thanks for the company! I forgot to take a photo of that coffee shop with "dropping coffee" β˜•οΈ

We had a great time and was so good to spend that with you and the rest!

Here in Prague, you can reach the airport walking too - it's quite close to the city centre. You'd go through woods though.

0.00058707 BEE

Wooohooo! Challenge accepted! πŸ˜ƒ

Wen #BuzzParty Prague? I have it on my list of places to visit, not I just need a strong motivational push to do it! πŸ˜ƒ BuzzParty would do the job! πŸ˜ƒ

0.00000436 BEE

No idea :) Feel free to stop by anytime though :) I could at least take you around some craft breweries, you'll hear some buzz after the sixth sample for sure :P

0.00033613 BEE

I reocognise some of the first scenes but then you seem to have gotten off the beaten trail and captured another side of Hamburg that we didnt see too much. I don't think I have ever walked to an airport before, this is a first I have heard someone doing it πŸ˜…

0.00058607 BEE

Hahahaha... Some have to do it for the first time! πŸ˜‚

Which gave me an idea... Maybe I could create a #AirportWalk challenge? lol... But, I suppose that, in most cases, roads to the airports aren't this nice and probably not even possible to do it... and probably not safe to do it on foot... πŸ˜ƒ

0.00002109 BEE

I wish I could tell you that you weren't so crazy for walking to an airport, but I'm sorry, I've never done it and never met anyone who has done it before, LOL. That said, the walk you did, seemed to be a nice one ;)

0.00057794 BEE

Hahaha... Thanks for your honesty! πŸ˜ƒ I saw in the comment section that some people did (shorter) walks, but even that is fine to me... I'm not the only crazy guy here... πŸ˜‚

0.00006097 BEE

Hehe! It's always a relief to know that there are more crazy people lol πŸ˜‚πŸ˜…

Seriously speaking I wouldn't have thought of walking to an airport, here it's impossible because it's on the outskirts of the city, but for example now that I think about it, the airport in Bogota, Colombia for example could be reached by walking. It's inside the city and there's a big avenue that leads to it. But it wouldn't be as pleasant a walk as the one you took.

0.00033293 BEE

Hamburg seems to have a unique and beautiful architecture! Beautiful pictures! I love the contrast between the greenery and the modernity of the city!

0.00056301 BEE

I suppose exactly that is the line that separates beautiful cities from "boring" cities... When you have diversity in infrastructure, nature, and parks, you can go to the other part of the city and have a feeling of being somewhere completely different!

0E-8 BEE

Those are some nice pictures and the weather looks pretty good too. I tend to just follow the google maps or some navigation software so it looks kind of nice when you just wander around trying to get to your destination.

0.00056737 BEE

The weather was perfect... I was a bit groggy from the weekend, bad headaches, and lack of sleep, but I did my best to enjoy this walk!

0E-8 BEE

Brilliant idea, huh? I am a walker myself, but I don't know if I would have pushed it to go to the airport on foot, even if it was within walking distance. I assume you had some luggage, didn't you? πŸ˜€ But you took some nice pictures!

0.00056859 BEE

Hehehe... It's interesting that only you connected the dots and asked about the luggage... πŸ˜‚ Luckily, I had "only" a backpack, but it was still around 10 kg on my back all the time...

0.00111558 BEE

10km with 10kg on your back... Man, and you aren't in the army either! 🀣

0.00032852 BEE

This kind of contents is probably one of your strongest suits.. you should visit more places.
The weather was perfect, the sun edified most of the pictures you took and that park, that's such a beautiful place.

Really?! Thanks for your kind words! 😍 I would like to visit more places, but to do that, I have to sort out my piggy bank... πŸ˜‚

0E-8 BEE

Well, hopefully the bull market might change that and you get to visit many places, I hope you're blessed enough.

Wow good friend, walking to the airport sure does sound like quite the adventure. I've never done it, but your journey makes it seem so fun and worth it. It's like discovering a whole new side to a city wow. You definitely did the route and didn't cheat PHπŸ₯°πŸ˜‚

0.00041988 BEE

Yeah, the point was to discover the "non-tourist" part of the city... as there were almost no people where I was walking, I suppose that mission is accomplished!

0.00000958 BEE

Is fully accomplished indeed P.πŸ₯°

It's exactly like that when all the people go together, we are mostly chatting so not so many pictures are taken. I also wish to join such an event one day and you all. All these scenic views and these beautiful buildings are very nice.
