First of all ,lemme tell you how much i am addicted to my mobile. My mobile is like my third hand....24/7 attached to me. I don't think i ever spent a complete 1 hour without my mobile. Sometime it pissed me off v bad.
I have tried so many times to avoid contact with mobile because now i use to have svere headache from continusly watching to screen.
But, there was a time when i becae successful in No Screen time. Out of my anger, i switched off my mobile for a moment and thought to avoid cintact for at least three days. And trust me its was way more hard then my imagination....
Lemme share it with you..how i spent that horrible time.
First I thought it would not be easy. 24 hours without my phoneand laptop, . How hard could it be? I am a physiotherapist, I tell my patients every day to reduce screen time, to move more, to live more. But what? I cant do it myself...ahh ..!
First i set the rules the night before. From Saturday 8 PM to Sunday 8 PM, no screens. No phone, no Instagram scrolling, no WhatsApp, no laptop, no Netflix. Only exception will be emergency calls from my landline, which never rings anyway. I keept my phone switched off in my drawer.
The first few hours were really hard for me. Anxiety, anger and way too bad mood.
At 8:05 Am, I picked up my phone out of habit. The screen was black. I remembered it was off. I laughed at myself. At 8:30 Am, I felt that familiar itch in my hand. I usually scroll while waiting for dinner to cook. This time I just stood in the kitchen, watching the Shami kebab and bread turn brown. It felt strange. I was feeling like something is missing, or the situation is boring...bla bla blaaa
Here is my breakfast

I made this breakfast without any music or video in the background. Just silence. I had my high-protein breakfast, and I actually tasted it. I wasn't eating while watching a reel. I was just eating.
Then boredom came. Around 10 AM, I had nothing to do. My house was clean. My breakfast was done. I would normally open Instagram at this time. I felt restless. So I picked up a notebook. I started writing. I wrote about my gym journey, about why I started again. I wrote for one hour straight. I had not written on paper in so long.
At 11 AM, I went for a walk. Not for steps counting, not to post a story. Just a walk. I saw my neighbors, I talked to the auntie next door. She said, "Arooba, you look fresh today." I smiled. I was fresh because I wasn't tired from screen light last night.
The Afternoon: the Clarity Phase....huh
This was the most magical part. After lunch, I sat on my balcony. No phone to distract me. My mind, which is usually noisy with 50 tabs open, became quiet. I started thinking clearly.
I realized how much time I waste. I spend almost 5-6 hours on screens daily without even noticing. I thought I was productive, but I was just busy being busy. I thought about my fitness goal. I started gym not for weight loss but for fitness, for strength. But I was still mentally weak, always comparing myself to others online.
Without the screen, I felt more present in my own body. I did some stretching, some light physiotherapy exercises I teach my patients. I felt my muscles more. I breathed better. My eyes, which usually burn at the end of the day, felt relaxed.
By 6 PM, I was counting down. I wanted to switch my phone on. Not because I missed it desperately, but because the habit is so strong. I kept thinking, "Only 2 hours left."At exactly 8 PM, I switched it on. 47 WhatsApp messages, 23 Instagram notifications, 11 Hive notifications. I looked at them for 10 minutes and then I felt... nothing. Nothing was that urgent. Nothing was that important that it couldn't wait 24 hours. The world did not stop because I disconnected.
So what really happens when you disconnect for 24 hours? Nothing dramatic. No miracle. But everything small changes.
Will I do it again? Yes. I have decided to do one screen-free Sunday every month. As a physiotherapist, I now understand that we don't just need to strengthen our bodies in the gym. We need to detox our minds too.
If you are reading this on your screen, I challenge you. Try it. Just 24 hours. Keep your phone off. See what happens. At first, you will feel anxious. Then bored. Then peaceful. That peace is worth it.
I told myself that istarted gym for fitness, right? Let's also start mental fitness.

STOP24 hours every month? It's too much isn't it?
Try with 20 minutes without screen then 30, followed by 40, 50 and an hour, then keep doing this everyday.

Sure
Huh... I think I haven't spent a day without the Internet in the last few years... I don't like mobile phones (probably because of bad eyesight š), but I'm definitely addicted to my laptop... It's getting better with time, but not as I would like...
To my defense, I'm an IT guy, and everything I do (work-related) is connected to the computer and the Internet... All that is a great excuse, but... I could do a "screen detox" during the weekends! For the last couple of months, I have tried to keep my weekends freer, as I'm not ready for the "full-off-grid mode" yet... š
Congrats on your achievement! It's a great first step... Now you have to repeat it next month to make it routine! š
