The Risk I Almost Didn't Take (And Why I Am Glad I Did) CONTEST #3

(edited)

After my graduation in Faisalabad in 2023, I was tired. Not just physically, but emotionally. Holding my final thesis was literay a sigh of peace.

I was far from home from 5 yeara, my family was in another city, and every day felt like a battle. I still remember sitting on my hostel bed with my degree in my hand, thinking, "I should just go home. I should quit."

Everyone goes through that phase after graduation. You study for 5 years, you give your best, and then suddenly you are standing alone in a city that is not yours, trying to find a job. Faisalabad gave me my degree, but it also made me feel so alone.

I wanted to go home. So badly. My mother was calling me every day, "Beta, come home, you can rest." And I wanted to. I really wanted to pack my bag and leave. But deep inside, one thought stopped me. I knew myself. I knew that if I quit at that moment and went home, I would never come back to my professional field. I would get comfortable at home. I would start saying "I will join next month," and that next month would never come. My degree would be just a paper on the wall. And I did not study physiotherapy for 5 years just to hang a degree.

So I had to make a decision. The safe decision was to go home, be with family, be comfortable. The risky decision was to stay here, alone, far from home, and try to start my career as a Physiotherapist in Faisalabad.

I took the risk. I stayed.

The first 2 months were the hardest. Finding a job as a fresh graduate is not easy. I went to clinics, I gave interviews, I got rejected. Some places offered me unpaid work. I cried many nights. I called my sister and said, "I think I made a mistake." But my sister was my strength. She was living with me here. She said, "If you leave now, you will regret it for your whole life. Let's try for one more month."

So I stayed one more month. And then one more.Slowly, things started to change. I got my first job in a Hospital. The salary was not much, but the experience was everything. I treated my first patient independently, a man with frozen shoulder. When he raised his arm after 3 weeks of my therapy and smiled, I felt something I never felt before. I felt like a real physiotherapist. I felt that I belong here.

After that job when i was more confident about work, I started taking private patients. Then I became an independent physiotherapist. It has been 3 years now. Three years since that day I almost packed my bag and left.

Today when I look back, I am so glad I didn't quit. If I had gone home that day, I would have never known how strong I am. Living here in Faisalabad taught me everything. It taught me how to manage money, how to deal with difficult patients, how to stay calm when nothing is working. It made me independent.

And the most beautiful part of staying was the memories I made with my sister. Because I stayed, we lived together for 5 years. We cooked together after long clinic hours, we laughed in our small kitchen, we went to the gym together, we explored Faisalabad, we supported each other when we were homesick. We have countless memories that we would have never made if I had gone home. She was not just my sister here, she was my home away from home.

Now I am an independent physiotherapist. Patients know me. They trust me. They call me and say, "Doctor, my mother is not walking, can you come?" That trust is everything. I restarted my gym journey for fitness, not weight loss, because I realized as a physiotherapist, I have to be fit to treat others.

The risk I almost didn't take was the risk of staying. It was uncomfortable, it was lonely, it was scary. But it was worth it.If I had chosen comfort that day, I would have lost my career, my growth, and those 3 years of beautiful memories with my sister.

So to anyone reading this who is standing at the same point after graduation, wanting to go home.... I understand you. But ask yourself: if you quit now, will you ever come back? If the answer is no, then stay. Take the risk. Struggle for a few months. It will be worth it.

I am glad I stayed in Faisalabad.
