Our choice

Ooh, Nigeria my nation “how I love thee” now that phrase above is something I mean with my whole heart, it’s not like I’m joking or trying to make fun of my nation, I feel really proud being a Nigerian but then I don’t know if my nation is proud to have me in it tho.

I want to dive deep into the topic of discussion today because it really grabbed my attention though I was actually among those who voted for that topic to be number and here it is. Talking about the term “voting,” it means a formal expression of opinion or choice made by individuals, especially in an election. “What a definition.” The definition of “vote” looks so simple in meaning, but when applied to my nation’s definition, or maybe my nation has not really concluded its definition of the term “vote”.

Because looking back at the different elections that has been held in my nation I don’t think any has to do with the term “voting” because from the definition it’s an expression of opinion, I can remember vividly the recent presidential election that was held some years back, the masses came out in numbers to vote, I can recall when my elder brother didn’t have his voters card and was being upset that he has to get it to make a good choice this time.

To change the nation for the better because our politicians go about blabbing about our votes making the right or wrong decision for us. He went to register for his voter's card and fortunately for him everything worked out so well that he got his voter's card just in a few days, the moment he got his voters card the excitement on his face said so many things. I can see how fierce he was in order to make this particular decision and get it right.

The day to exercise our voting rights came and he went to cast his vote, later that evening the results were already compiled and had started announcing them. Only to find out that the person whom the whole nation was anticipating didn’t win, leaving everyone’s hearts broken in pieces and the whole nation bleeding in suffering and poverty.

Everyone in a nation knows who the right candidate is in an election and the right candidate to Mr A is likely to be different from the right candidate to Mr B. Everyone possesses the veto power to vote for their right candidate without being told by a third party but then it’s the majority that carries the vote, the candidate with the highest votes wins and that is it.

For a nation like mine where people’s votes are bought with money exchanged for long-term suffering. I remember listening to one of these early morning news on a radio station when someone mentioned that in Nigeria we don’t do election that what Nigeria does is selection but then looking at that statement it is very correct to an extent.

When your votes don’t count what does it mean? It means selection. In a nation like mine even if you carry a town crier and announce who the right candidate is, my nation being possessed with the veto power of manipulation will still manipulate to announce someone else the winner. Who knows I might be announced as a winner one day without being nominated by anyone.

Thanks for Reading❤️

One of the delusions of democracy is that power belongs to the people, or people have the right to vote their preferred candidate into power. Franchise is an illusion, a textbook theory, with little or no effect on what is done in reality. Voting does not determine a leader, the agency does.
