Over the past decade, the world has undergone a vast level of technological advancement in areas such as healthcare, food processing and general lifestyle aid, including mobility. Self-driving cars are one of these advancements. Although, they have not really been fully accepted by our society due to some technical limitations, automated cars like Tesla exist. With Tesla vehicles, the presence and attention of a driver is fully needed during every ride. In fact, the drivers are regarded as the savior behind the wheel, ready to take over in cases of emergencies. However, the automation in this car model makes it far easier and less stressful for any car owner, as it enables hands-free driving and carries out some operational instructions without the input of the driver.

Fully self-driving cars, on the other hand, mean that the car is designed to operate without a driver. There is no one behind the wheel, and every single function is fully automated in such a way that the presence of a driver is needless. The car is expected to handle driving exactly the way a human would, but with more logic and precision. These cars have inbuilt maps for different geographical areas, they are able to detect incoming traffic and bypass it using a different route. They are also programmed to obey traffic lights and make driving decisions that help avoid accidents involving pedestrians, contributing to more efficient transportation. All of these are made possible because of the inbuilt cameras, sensors, and AI systems that work.
Self-driving cars are also believed to use less gas compared to cars driven by humans, and this is without doubt, beneficial to our environment undergoing rapid climate change. However, a direct disadvantage is that the technologies they rely on for accuracy, such as sensors and cameras, would require much more energy, which can contribute heavily to more environmental mishaps.
Another disadvantage of society adopting self-driving cars is affordability. These cars will be highly expensive because of the effort, materials and advanced technology involved in their production. As a result, the average citizen of a country may not be able to access such services for convenience, which will only widen the gap in a capitalist society.
Thirdly, just as we use artificial intelligence for academic research, high-end reports, and vibe coding and still observe some technical erors in the outputs, the AI systems used in self-driving cars are not immune to failures. Most AI driven systems still requires human contribution, but self-driving cars may not. So while they may function with more technical precision, they can never replace the need for human instinct on routes such as the highway. There are also situations where a human driver would know how to navigate better based on years of experience and good judgement. But a self-driving car will only be able to respond based on imputed logic. This limitation alone makes the adoption of self-driving cars fully debatable and subject to valid criticism.

Lastly, this automated self-driving system can sometimes be unable to distinguish similar weather conditions such as mist, fog, and snow. But a human driver would be able to make more accurate driving decisions based on the clear interpretation of visual elements. And since AI systems are still being developed for more accurate functions, human input remains crucial in driving.
Now, in the event of an accident involving a fully self-driving car, it is very possible that no one can be held responsible, and this can be dangerous because in our society, we all need some form of accountability to enable us tackle human carelessness and prevent persistent problems with law and order. Thankfully, the pushback on self-driving cars has been persistent and the only option available to consumers are automated cars with human supervision. This ensures that responsibility can be tied to accident or violation of traffic orders.
With all these considerations on the pros and cons of self-driving cars, my stance is pretty much clear. The disadvantages of self-driving cars outweigh the advantages, and thus, I do not support the widespread adoption in our society.
