Where Do we Draw The Line?.

This third edition topic from Hive Learners just really has me thinking , especially because like two it three months back I saw something online that honestly left me speechless for a moment , so it was a trending video and I am sure some of you saw it too, it was where the First Lady visited a school somewhere in the east, and the students were doing that chant song kind of , you know the one that they sing, “Na our mama be this o, we no get another one.”

See normally , everybody was supposed to respond with “Na our mama be this o!” but one girl like that in the video replied, “Na your mama be this o,” and just like that short video just flew all over the internet like wildfire, People were laughing, reposting, you get l, it became the social media gist for days.

But the real wahala started when they said the girl , the one who made the joke was being expelled from school , as how nah?.... In fact, at some point , the gist was flying that they had expelled her entirely from all schools in the state, seehonestly, I was shocked because yes, the video made a bit of mockery of the First Lady, but let us say the truth , the First Lady is not her mother , so why would they force her to say otherwise?

The whole thing just made me start wondering, should things we say or joke about on the social media really be like enough reason for someone to just lose their place in school or even their job sef?

Because let's say the truth , everyone is always online nowadays , people express themselves, share their opinions, make jokes, sometimes even out of frustration or just for cruise, So now ,does that mean every single comment or post should be held against them? Hmm…..

You see for me, this girl just exercised her freedom of speech and expression, She did not insult anyone directly ,she did not curse, she just said what she felt at that particular moment, yeah…., It might not align with what the school or society expects, but that doesn’t mean she should be punished like that.

Yeah .. we get it , some institutions want to protect their image, They feel if their student or staff says something that isout of line , it reflects on them too as a while , but still, there has to be a kind of balance.
so If the opinion does not promote hate, violence, or disrespect other people’s rights, why should it cost someone their education or job, you get?

So let’s not also forget that the video went viral because people could relate, Most students, if we are being honest, probably felt the same way and just did n’t say it out loud, So why crucify one person for simply voicing what many were already thinking ehn….?

And funny enough, after all the noise online, I heard that the school later reversed the suspension or something. Which, to me, shows that maybe they have also realized they acted too quickly or unfairly somehow

Let me tell you , see , if I was the one holding the mic and I didn’t like what they were chanting, I would have said the same thing, because why should I lie ? And that is the issue we can’t keep forcing people to say things just to maintain peace, when deep down, it is not their truth.

This whole situation just shows how sensitive the world is becoming, one little joke or post can just turn your whole life upside down , That is why these days, before some people tweet or post anything, they start thinking twice, even three times sef, but me, I still stand by what I feel the girl didn’t deserve suspension, and I am also glad they reversed it, It is okay to have opinions, and as long as you are not hurting anyone directly , you should be allowed to speak your mind.

Social media is juat a blessing that allows people express their inner feelings against oppression and whatnot.
I'm glad to be on social media and to express my opinion on debate. If my employer feels threatened by my social media presence, then he has to repent from his evil doings. Simple.

My dear sister, social media is no longer a free space to express yourself anymore. They want to put fear in people's minds
