Should We Just Kill The Grading System?

The grading system has been around for a long time and we have just accepted it without really thinking about it, The letters A, B, C D F are very important in a students life, okay what if we just got rid of all that and used a simple pass or fail system? No details, just you pass and you did not pass, shey that sounds easy right? But is it actually better, especially for how students feel about themselves and their learning?

Okay Let's talk about this because there are some good arguments surrounding this topic from the Hivelearners table.

The traditional grading system can be very hard on students, A student who works hard and get a C from having a D is still considered below average. Another student who coasts by with natural talent gets an A without really pushing themselves. The letter grade does not show how hard the student tried or how much they improved. It just gives a judgment, for students getting a low grade is not motivating. It is very disappointing, and when you are crushed repeatedly, you start believing the grade IS you. That kind of damage runs deep.

Pass/fail removes that hierarchy. Suddenly you're not the B kid or the F kid, You either got there or you are working toward it, there is something freeing about that especially for younger students who are still figuring out who they are and what they are capable of.

This is where it gets complicated.

Not being explicit about HOW someone passed or failed removes incredibly useful information, if a student barely scraped a pass, they and their teacher need to know that, If they absolutely crushed it, that should mean something too, for getting into a good university for getting a scholarship or for feeling proud of themselves, Just saying pass or fail does not give us any useful information, It is like a doctor saying you are okay or not okay without explaining what is wrong.

Students also need to know how they are doing so they can improve. Knowing you got a certain score tells you where you stand and what you need to work on, Using pass/fail without details takes away that feedback, It might not even help students feel better about themselves, because students will STILL know internally whether they barely passed or smashed it, and without official recognition of excellence, high achievers lose motivation too.

The morale argument also assumes that the main thing hurting students is the grade itself, when really the deeper issue is how grades are USED, When grades become a measure of worth rather than a measure of learning, that's the real problem, A student who gets a C and hears you're stupid, whether from adults, peers, or their own inner voice is being failed by the culture around grades, not the letter itself.

I feel that what might actually work better is keeping some form of graded feedback but changing what it is attached to, thats Effort, growth, mastery levels , these are more honest and more human than a single letter that tries to summarize a whole person's understanding, Some schools are already experimenting with this, and the results are really interesting.

So getting rid of grades entirely,.Using pass or fail? Probably not a good idea, It trades one problem for another.. Talking about what grades are really, for and whether they are helping or hurting students, That is a conversation worth having, because now too many students are being defined by a letter instead of being understood as learners.

That is the real problem we need to fix.

The letter grading format is the best approach in my opinion as it help students, parents and teachers get valuable feedback about the students performance and what's needed to improve.

Totally agree with you, though I don't see it changing anytime soon.

The letter grading helps to ascertain where a child's strength or weakness lies in a subject /class. In a previous school I worked with, they practiced intelligence profiling, all A students were in the A class till it got to the E/F students. The parents and students were aware of their performance and strived to do better.
