Should People Pay For Their Past Opinions?

Okay so this is actually a topic I feel very strongly about, and I think a lot of people will relate to what I am about to say, Like, have you ever gone back and looked at stuff you posted years ago? because I have, and honestly? It is actually painful, see I am talking full body cringe, rushing to hit delete before anyone else sees it, so the things I thought were cool or funny or worth sharing back then… yeah, no, Not it, and if I can look at my own old posts and think ....what was I even on,.... then I think it is only fair we extend that same grace to other people too.
...

Here's the thing about growth, it is indeed real, truth is people change, That is not just something we say to make ourselves feel better, it is literally how life works the person you were at 15, 19, 20 is not the same person you are today, Your experiences shape you, the people you meet shape you, the things you go through shape you, so why are we so quick to drag someone back to who they used to be when they have clearly moved past it?

Now see I am not that saying everyone deserves a free pass, yeah.... there is actually a difference between someone who said something ignorant because they genuinely did not know better and someone who was just outright malicious and has shown zero signs of changing, those are two very different situations, but a lot of the cancellations we see? They are not even about the second type of person, they are about somebody who said something dumb years ago, has since grown, apologised, and literally become a different human being and yet the internet decides that is still who they are, that does not sit right with me.

And the scary part is that this affects our real lives, we are talking about people losing jobs, losing deals, losing their whole career over some posts from a decade ago, see ehn, how is that fair? You are essentially punishing someone for a version of themselves that does not even exist anymore, it is like going back in time to arrest someone for a crime they haven't committed yet, except even weirder because the person has already served their growth journey and come out better on the other side.

I also think social media has made this worse because everything is archived, every stupid thing you said at 17 is just sitting there, waiting to be screenshot and sent around, we are literally the first generation having to deal with our entire digital history being held against us, people who grew up before the internet could say dumb stuff, cringe about it years later, and move on quietly, we don't get that luxury, and it's honestly a bit unfair.
Look, accountability matters, I am not arguing against that, If someone does something wrong, they should own it, address it, and do the work, but there has to be a point where we decide that the work has been done and we let people move forward, because if we never allow people to grow past their worst moments, what are we really encouraging? we are basically telling people that no matter how much they change, it won't matter and that's a dangerous message, the world should focus more on who people are today, not to ignore history, but to recognise that history does not have to be destiny, people mess up, people learn, people become better, and when they do, they deserve the chance to live in that better version of themselves without the past constantly being weaponised against them.

That's just my honest take.
