Literacy Is Good , But It Isn't Everything.

It's another edition of the Hive learners prompt, and somehow the topics this days tends to fall in line with how my thoughts have being going this days , it's kinda an interesting one to actually really discuss , and somehow I can't wait to read other people's opinions on this topic. Alright then let's Dive in ....

So let me just start by saying this , being a literate person is in fact a very good thing, It helps a lot in so many ways, I mean, in how you can relate with your children, your neighbours, your environment, even how you carry yourself in public, it just shows, You see the way a learned person will handle a certain situation will be very different from someone who doesn’t know anything at all will handle it.

See, When you are literate, you do have access to more information, you understand certain things better, and you are able to apply common sense in some certain matters, Like for example , a literate parent is more likely to sit down and explain things better to their child, teach them basic manners also encourage education, and that helps to shape their child’s mindset, see ,It is not even about how rich or poor you are, sometimes it is just how exposed and informed you are that makes the difference.

And even with neighbours, you will notice that literate people tend to be more calm and respectful, They will knock on your door instead of shouting your name from the window, They will reason with you instead of jumping into unnecessary arguments , see literacy has a way of polishing someone, both in character and also in their thinking.

But… and this is a very big “but”… that does not mean literate people cannot be wicked. And this is where many people get it wrong, you cannot say that just because someone went to school or speaks good English does not mean they won’t do bad things, see being wicked is not by education, it is by the heart. You will see someone that has PhD but still doing evil things behind closed doors, and You will meet people that are very exposed, very learned, but the way they treat others is just very terrible.

So me I don’t believe that literacy automatically means someone will be kind or will never hurt others, No, It can only guide a person’s behavior, yes, It can help with emotional intelligence, yes. But if someone already has a wicked heart, no amount of book knowledge can change that unless the person decides to change themselves you get?.

And that is the Same thing with mistakes, Some people believe that being literate means you will never make mistakes, Nah....That one is a big lie, even the most educated people still mess up, they still make bad decisions, they still act on emotions, and they still do things they later regret, because at the end of the day, we are all humans, and mistakes are part of life, whether you went to school or not, life will still test you.

So while I 100% support people becoming more educated and literate especially in a country like ours where ignorance is just everywhere ,I also know that literacy alone is not just enough it should go hand in hand with good morals, empathy, and emotional balance.

Being learned is good, It helps you raise better children. It helps you relate better with others. It gives you confidence and makes you more aware. But being kind, being good, being human ,those things go beyond the classroom.

That's why I said that it's not about the education, wickedness is in the heart of those who allow it

Literate people are even the ones that hurt others the most, go to offices and see what's happening there.

Very well said. You could view it as being a literate is like wearing a particular type of clothe that increases your social ranking. It's just a clothe but you're still the same person underneath. Sometimes, the literate people are more prone to doing not so good things as they have the knowledge to justify why they're doing it when in reality it's just a lack of discipline on their side.

Yes I do also think it's cause they lack discipline

I think being literate doesn't guarantee someone of being educated and well-mannered. But being illiterate is like a disease in the society. People will avoid and make fun of you.
