If I have one usefully concrete skill that’s at the opposite end from the whole online universe, it’s baking, by this I mean baking cakes, pastries and all that’s sweet and good in the world, and that bring joy to all at parties. It has been something I have had for a really long time. Actually, now that I do the math, I have had this baking skill for about 10 years now if not more.
I started learning it back then, not because I thought it was going to be my big career path or anything, but because I just enjoyed the process. Mixing flour, cracking eggs, that sweet smell that fills the house when a cake is in the oven… it’s the kind of peaceful activity that keeps me calm. Even when life is giving me gbas gbos, once I’m in the kitchen baking, I feel like I have a little bit of control.
Now if you ask me whether this skill would make me money if the world suddenly lost the internet, hmm… I won’t lie, I doubt it. Not because the skill itself isn’t good enough it’s very good but because we all know the internet is like the main tool for advertising these days.
Without WhatsApp statuses, Instagram stories, Facebook posts or even Hive where you can show your work and get support, it’s hard. The internet helps to put your product out there. You can bake the nicest cake, but if nobody knows you, you’ll just be baking for your own kitchen. That’s just the honest truth. Most of the cake orders I’ve even gotten over the years came from people that saw my work online or through referrals that started online.
But even at that, I still plan to keep getting better at it. The baking world is constantly changing. Every time I go online or scroll through pages, I see new designs, new recipes, new techniques. There’s always something fresh to learn. You’ll just see a cake that looks like a handbag or like jollof rice and be wondering, “Is this cake or magic?”
Sure, I realize there’s always room to grow in this baking thing. That is why even when I am not doing baking for people, I am baking for practice, to try new things, try new styles. I want to be able to bake when a birthday is not the only party I’m able to throw, for weddings, for baby showers, for all those big events. That’s what I’m shooting for.
Plus I’m thinking to join a class again also just to refresh the skills and learn more advanced stuff. Because it’s one thing to have the foundation, but you also need to keep upgrading. Even if the internet waka comot one day (God forbid sha), I still want to be confident that my handwork can speak for me offline too.
So yeah, that’s the practical skill I have baking. It’s sweet, creative, and calming. And even though the internet helps a lot in promoting it, I’ll still keep working on it. Who knows? One day, it might still be the thing that puts food on my table, both literally and financially.

That's nice, if you are a person that loves junks like me just keep practicing so you get to eat whatever you bake.
Baking is a really good skill.
😂 that's the deal
I will. Thanks for your comment
These cakes are good looking. Like seriously to me you're an expert for you to be able to bake this second cake that looks like avatar. I also wish to know how to bake because I love it when I see people baking with love. Sometimes when I scroll through my Tiktok and I see people baking cakes that looks like handbag, house, house, human being itself, I'm always amazed me. Maybe whenever I have free time I will join a baking class.
You can join a class , I think that is also nice
Thank you for curating
