The Shadows of Honesty (an original poetry)

The Shadows of Honesty

Which road will this heart rather choose?
A painful truth or a gentle excuse?
Would not knowing be a better thing
Or would it only leave me wondering?

Some words unsaid, some coated in lies
A choice to protect and prevent hurtful cries
An eternal shadow that'll stay day and night
I'll forever question if it was wrong or right

By telling the truth, will consequences arise?
Or will innocent and kind lies justify disguise?
In all honesty, I'm hesitant to ask even if I may
In a world of black and white, can't I choose gray?

Can it be acceptable to tell a lie?
This is a pretty old ethical question that we get to come across many times in our lives. Generally, lying is frowned upon by many because it destroys trust, which would later end up in more consequences than we can imagine.

However, there are times when bending the truth a little might be considered justifiable, especially when you're trying to protect someone's feelings or when you're trying to surprise someone with something. Other times, it may even be a matter of someone's life or safety.

Personally, I think white lies can be necessary in certain situations. A gentle excuse to mask a painful truth might be a better choice. But then again, people's feelings differ.

Even when I say I'd rather lie a little in order to protect someone, I sometimes think, "Is protecting them necessary?"

I, for one, would rather know the truth, get hurt by it, and eventually move on. The truth may hurt, but it can set you free.

However, not everyone is strong enough to handle the truth. Some would prefer not knowing, to stay happy in the world they try to create for themselves... and I respect their decision. What you don't know won't hurt you, right?

The weight of lies also differs depending on the situation. Let's say, for example, a friend of yours asked you to hide her from her abusive partner. The partner then knocks on your door, asking about your friend's whereabouts. would you lie or not?

On the other hand, when a friend of yours did something bad and asked you to hide them. A police officer came knocking on your door, asking whether your friend had contacted you or not. What would you do?

In the former question, I'd lie for my friend. However, for the latter, I'd tell the police officer the truth. It may be betraying my friend, but who knows what he or she has done, right? I might even end up being an accomplice. I know it sounds selfish, but if my friend is innocent, then there's nothing to worry about.

The world is black and white. Unfortunate or not, we are often asked to choose between A and B, and nothing in between.

In a world full of societal standards, people mostly just consider what's right or wrong, what's good or evil. You can do this, but you can't do that.

However, although hesitant, I'd rather choose gray. I decide depending on the situation and what I believe in. We may differ in opinions or principles, but we shouldn't close our minds.

So, what do you think? Are there instances when lies can be justified? Feel free to comment below. :)
