The social media platforms has created opportunities that we can say are good and has paid off in many ways. But we can also see that everything that has advantages equally has disadvantages, because we can already see some of the disadvantages of social media like the crowdfunding or go-fund-me as many caption’s it.

We can practically see movements of such in almost of social media platform. WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and so on. And the approach to this usually will come with someone putting himself or herself out there to represent a person or group of persons with a pity caption. “Please help this person or that person with some kind of need tag. This is the level the social media has taken us to.

Thinking and visualizing this kinds of movement online is what I see as not totally bad, since we have many good souls who gives out to help those in need, like many who are stuck in the hospital bad without money for treatment, others cut up with deserted and homeless. Some students that has no capable parents and those who cater for the orphanage. So, its not truly a bad motive when people wants help and people are willing to help in mass. People from far and near that has no blood 🩸 relation to whom ever that is involved.

The problem we have here is who should we trust? Who should we hold accountable because the internet is already polluted with scams and many individuals has sold shame, so they can go to any length with untrue stories just to get money 💴 from people. And this is usually not a small amount of money .

I have witnessed someone wanting to use fake story to scam individuals in a church congregation. This is not online scamming, but physical scamming. This guys just join the church ⛪️. A very big church here in Lagos. Thinking he can scam people easily, he came with story of loosing his son just not up to one month he joined the church. But the woman he approached asked him several questions on how everything happened and found out that he is not being straightforward. So she told him off because the story has no backing.

So this is what usually will happen online, but who will ask questions and who will answer? They have used this system of crowdfunding to systematically be ripping people off large sum of money 💴. Seeing that is working, many are joining into the system because it seemed easy way out. Many of them can even create a new account for this purpose with unreal story photos.

Can Online Donor Platforms Be Trusted?

For me , the answer to this question is “NO”. Usually, I will prefer to donate to a needy person physically and feel not cheated than donating online. Although, I know that there are people who do not care if a story is true or not as long as they have the money to give to the person with the story. And this is why crowdfunding will persist without care . But I can always trust some that are verified. I have heard of GoFundMe and others. This is the only thing that can make me trust any person or donate online.
