Christmas Festivities and Fading Excitement

It’s that time of the year again. Christmas is upon us once again and a lot of people are already busy with cooking a lot of dishes to mark Tommorrow’s celebration.

As a kid I used to feel the Christmas in the air even though I am not a Christian. I used to enjoy it particularly due to the fact that we were in Christian dominated town so you had no choice but to be reminded that Christmas is here. There was this friend of mine at those time who always had a Christmas tree at his house. If I can remember correctly it was around the 22nd of December that they used to bring those decorations out. Before that friend I’d only seen Christmas trees in movies.

So imagine how fascinated I was when I saw a Christmas tree for the first time. It was an eye saw for me as I’d longed to see a Christmas tee. After that year the rest or the years stopped being about the tree. It was now about the food. In that same house they used to cook a lot of dishes and also they baked cake to mark the Christmas and the new year as well.

I can say we were fortunate as they brought one of the cakes to our house each year. Fast forward life happened and I grew up. Ever since then I’ve never been excited about Christmas. Part of the reason being that I am not a Christian and also due to the fact that I don’t fancy these occasions as well.

Christmas in my country has turned to a month of festivities. This is because it is in this month that most workplaces give their staff break from work to go home and celebrate. In these circumstances families mark the celebration with all these programs. Some of them are occasions which aren’t meant for kids so most of them are attended by the youth.

The only time I’ve ever enjoyed Christmas was last 2 years to be precise. We travelled to my aunts place and she did a great job at hosting us very well. We had places to visit everyday. In Accra as well they make a big deal out of Christmas as they try to decorate every corner of the town so people are in the spirit of these festive holidays.

For me this year will definitely be as dry as it has been for most of Christmas. Last year I was fortunate to be doing my service and on that day I was on duty. It was a nice time at work as we had the chance to interact with people from all walks of life as they passed through the terminal.

This year I’ll be at home and it’ll be like any other day of the year for me. For now even I am not a fan of all these celebrations and in my home place we are filled with Muslims so this place will feel like any normal day for us all. How will you be celebrating this Christmas season? Will it be as dry as mine?
