American Rules on Discipline Don’t Fit in Africa

First of all let me say that I am an African. You’d wonder why I’ll start this post with saying that I am an African? Well, that should say a lot. Over here in Africa things work differently from how they work in the states. In Africa there are a lot of things we see differently and sincerely I think those things won’t change.

I say they won’t change cause we were brought up in this same way. Having being brought up in that way means that we see those ways as being effective because of the type of people we are.

For me, African kids mostly respond to that rod. I say this with my full chest as I am an African. If this was coming from someone who is not an African then I’ll say he or she is lying but growing up in this type of set up has only shown me that yes, we do listen to the rod.

Nonetheless I won’t sit here and pretend I’ve never thought of suing my mother. I say my mother cause she is the one who has put me through hell as a kid. I was fortunate(un) to have my mom in the same school as I am. She was a teacher there and the unfortunate part was that I was in her class at one point.

Being the Rubilu that I am she would constantly beat me if anyone reported me for the smallest thing. Well, she knew what her son was capable of doing and I will admit that 99% of the time I was at fault. The 1% that I was able to defend myself from trouble I did it by lying myself out of trouble lol.

Nonetheless I still wanted to sue my mom for putting me through a though time. For me, the only time I had such an idea was after I watched an American movie where the child called the police on his dad for hitting him. I thought it was all for show but after I asked around someone said in America you can call the police to have your parents arrested for hitting you.

Well, I did think of that idea but I was quickly told that it wouldn’t work in Africa so I killed the idea right there and then.

What do I think?

Well, from my point of view I think it’ll be a bad idea to bring that sort of thing to Africa. I agree that something like this might be working for people outside Africa cause that is what they are used to. Down here in Africa we are accustomed to correcting a child in a certain type of way.

I am against the idea of using extensive ways of correcting children as most times kids can be corrected through dialogue. On few occasions kids need to be put to the rod in this part of the world. I must say that, most of us are better today because of the types of punishments we were given when we were little.

Now that I am grown no one will dare beat me but I am in check. I know that I can go around doing things that I like but I’ve been made to understand and now I know that their actions will only come back to haunt me later on in life.

So yh, for me I think such an idea wouldn’t cut it here.
