IS SCHOOL REALLY A SCAM?...

(edited)

School na scam” is a common phrase in my country. It is an automatic chant in the mouths of my fellow countrymen today, and that’s because it has been in existence for quite sometime and has been proven to be true to an extent on various occasions, thanks to the biased system of governance running wild in the country today…

Honestly, as a student in the tertiary institution who is currently studying to become a Laboratory Scientist, I don’t completely believe school is a scam, but to an extent I definitely believe it’s a scam, and i owe this little doubt of mine to the unbalanced and biased system of governance running rampant in my country. These people have not only made many of us stop believing in the educational system, but have also made many capable heads out there doubt their abilities and capabilities to be learned…

Imagine spending more than a decade studying to graduate primary school, junior high school and college level, and an additional 5 years in the tertiary institution, graduating with one of the best degrees out there only to become a P.O.S attendant or end up working in a sector that is entirely different from what you studied in school. Are such results meant to motivate or demotivate one from studying. This system has turned everything upside down, now there’s almost no difference between the degree holders and the illiterate, and we have our government to thank for that…

Even with the rate at which most people look down on education nowadays, many people out there still want to study within the four walls of a school and graduate with a good degree, and that’s because this opportunity gives them an edge over those that aren’t learned or aren’t as learned as them. Graduating as one of the best students in the tertiary institution and that too with the best degree doesn’t guarantee one a successful career in life. The only benefit that comes from this privilege are the opportunities, the opportunity to be considered first before others…

To me, school is not a scam and also to an extent it is a scam. The country we are right now has told us otherwise, we are in a country where someone who graduated with lower degree is earning more than someone who graduated with the highest degree in school. This is to tell you how biased the system is. Those with money, connection and little education own the highest share…

Is getting a degree still worth the effort?

Honestly, if you had asked me this question on a bad day, days like when I’m extremely stressed from school activities and the likes, I’d have said no, and that also In block letters, with many reasons attached to it, one of it being the fact that it is not completely rated in this country of mine. A degree in this country are just some words written and stamped on a paper…

To me, i think getting a degree is definitely worth it in this modern age. Even if i don’t intend to survive with my degree, i still want to have it because of future opportunities. Me bagging a degree is personal, it’s not meant for anyone other than myself and my family. I just want to bag it for the sake of future opportunities. We never can tell there might be an opportunity to make use of it later in the future, if not in this country, another country would do…

I think this degree of a thing should be considered more of a personal choice. It shouldn’t be imposed or made compulsory, especially to those who don’t have the resources to bag them. Let those who have enough resources chase it and as for those who don’t have enough resources, let them sit it out, after all having a degree doesn’t guarantee a life filled with success, but would definitely give one an edge over others in life…

Honestly, i have actually practiced what i learnt in school a couple of times since i got back, an example is the phenomenon of resonance, the principle of solubility and the process of evaporation; this is a practical in physics and chemistry, and i must say they are legit, and i owe school for that privilege, it gave me an edge…

Talking about MORE things that needs to be done by the school system, i don't think there's need for any other thing right now. I would have mentioned an EED center, but deeply thinking about it now i realized most schools have an entrepreneurship center; a place where students can pick up any hand work to learn and be perfect at it for future purpose...

In conclusion, school is not a scam, don't let anyone deceive you or tell you otherwise. It opens door for more opportunities and gives one an edge in life. Utilize the opportunity if it opens up for you, and for those who don't have this opportunity, guess what, there is always a way. School doesn't guarantee one a successful life, it is just a path that can lead to success. You can also make it outside school, so don't be limited...

There are a lot of things that need to be done for students especially in federal universities. Students welfare need to be taken care of because students are not happy in these universities and it's just sad.

No matter how messed up a government will be or how difficult situations surrounding education might be, the greatest gift anybody can ever receive in life is to be educated.

Even if you didn't get to use your certificate to get a job, that knowledge that you acquired will never be taken away from you and that is worth alot.

Thank you for sharing @quduus1
