Home or Retirement Facility? Navigating Elderly Care Choices

My siblings and I had a conference WhatsApp call recently with our uncle from our mother's side because this is a once-in-a-while thing. We spoke at length, and that was when we got to know that our grandmother is 100 years of age and still alive, though her eyes aren't in good shape. We were speechless at first; along the line, he complained to us how she (grandma) had been shouting and insisting on returning back to the village rather than being in the city with them. Who would take care of such a woman with bad sight unless she is brought under someone's care?

My grandma was taken to live with our uncle two years ago when there was no one to care for her in the village. Everyone who was with her had died, and so, the best solution was for her to be taken away instead of my uncle travelling every week to check on her, which isn't the best considering the insecurity and price inflation in the country. But seriously, it's not easy to take care of old people when one has the work they are doing, but that is the best instead of giving them away to some professionals to care for them. Most times, it doesn't work that way than to have your parents under your close watch.

On the other hand, my paternal grandmother, before she died was a retired teacher and ever since then, she has always been at home. When her children realized they wouldn't be able to be available as everyone needed to move on to pursue their careers and lives, they brought people including my last siblings and two of my cousins to take care of her while they were responsible for their education. They built a house for her, and it was easier to always call every minute just to know how well she was doing. Everything was catered for her and she never suffered till her lifetime.

The old ones need care and it is that time when we always believe that it is our turn to take care of them now that they have no strength again. Their skin is back to that of a newborn baby, and everything about them needs to be handled carefully, but it's safer and better to have them under one's close watch than opting for retirement homes, where sometimes, it doesn't work as planned.

In some situations, some oldies won't accept that, especially when you have the ones who are acquainted with their homes and wouldn't choose to be taken away to another place even if finance isn't an issue. They want to be in their hometown, where they are known and it's the best for them. The best one can do is to hire qualified carers who would be able to take care of them if the children aren't available to do that. At least this would allow them to come around to spend time with them just like we were doing before my grandma died.

The only time one would opt for a retirement home or professional care is when older people are neglected by their children because it happens a lot. Some of them abandon their oldies to live and survive alone, and it's so pitiful when you see these old people around you trying to survive. These are the kind of people who should be moved to a home where they would be watched and cared for since there's no family member to do that.

My dear sis, caring for the elderly is not an easy task o.i have come across an eighty year old woman who was so difficult to please and care for. All she did was rain curses on those around her and this made them to be hostile towards her.

I liked the way you all took care of your paternal grandmother. That was lovely and kind of you all but in some situations whereby there are no little ones around to care for the elderly, I go with hiring a care giver. Only issue is finance.

May we have the means to cater to the needs of our elderly ones, so that they can spend their last days in happiness and tranquility.

Hahaha. I wonder why most oldies aren't conscious of the fact that they are already closer to the grave and should act good instead of raining curses when they ought to be at peace and stay calm. They are so difficult to take care of.
Yes, finance is always the issue to cater for them but we continue to do our best and also pray to God for His provisions. Thank you, sis and a big amen to your prayer.

100 years o age that is rare now days and I appreciate that your uncle tak good care of her. Elder should be taken care by their children as this is their time to pay of what the parents do when they were kids.

Exactly. It's pay back time. Oldies need more care at this stage. Thank you for your comment.

I enjoyed this post because the problem was brought and a brilliant solution was provided. In mine, I was talking about how I became wise from learning from my grandma and all sort. I and my cousins stayed with her in school at the family house and she had a lot of stories and wisdom to share with us. Family taking care of family is the best and if everyone is busy and there is money, just employ someone that will take care of her at home where they can see their family. It gives them strength too

There's benefit in having those oldies around us because we learn a lot of stories from them. This can't be possible when they are taken to retirement homes for care. Thank you for reading my publication, Fash.

Some people resist to leave hometown in their old age and I know it's not so easy to leave but I think resisting too much is good for their children. My grandmother is also such a person. Fortunately, there are my uncle's family in village to take care of her.

Yes, most grandparents are acquainted to their hometown and wouldn't want to move to another place or city. They'd prefer their children coming to visit them in the village.

0.00000000 BEE

I can understand them. They spend whole life in village and thinking to leave village is difficult for them.

This is such a heartfelt reflection on caring for our elders. Your family's dedication to ensuring your grandmother is well looked after, despite the challenges, is truly admirable. It's a touching reminder of the love and responsibility we owe to those who cared for us.

Yes. To the older ones, we owe them back love and responsibilities as they have done when they were young and had the strength. Thank you for reading 📚 ❤️

You took a very good decision to take care of them because not everyone can do this. Nowadays, there are some people who, in order to take care of old people, shift them to old age homes and their condition becomes worse.
Serving old people is a very virtuous act and you will definitely get its reward.

0.00000000 BEE

You are very right. For some older ones that are moved to homes other than theirs become worse than they'd imagined. It is more better and preferable to hire someone to come over to care for them than taking them out for care.

Our old people deserve everything good to make sure their life is enjoyed and not endured.

You've said it all. Most times, professionals are better equipped to take care of aging family members if people do not have enough time to care for them. What's sad is when people completely abandon them with carers. We should still be very much involved in their lives.

0.00000000 BEE

That is it. Professionals are only involved when there's no one to care for them and even at that, they mustn't be abandoned.
