One car, too many problems

(edited)

We are in the era where using a car is more important because of the safety of the family; some public transport is not safe anymore, so the best way people think they could protect their families while going out is by having a personal car for transportation.

The idea of one car for the family is not bad; in fact, it will reduce a lot of accidents, traffic, and, of course, the carbon that is polluting the air we breathe on a daily basis. But then I am not sure it is the best idea to act on in this economy that we are now.

Let’s look from the aspect of transportation fees; if someone is earning a salary and such a person is using public transport well, he or she must have known that most of the salary is going to be spent on transportation alone. But if such a person has a car, it will make him or her manage her salary wisely.

Now let’s talk about the whole family with just one car. We all know how demanding it is to have children who are still in secondary school and how stressful it is to take children to school on a bike, yet the father works in a far place, which he will need the car for mostly, but still the mother also needs the car to take children to school, branch market to stock the house, and probably go to her business area if she has one.

In that kind of situation, having just one car for the family wouldn’t be possible because just one car wouldn’t be enough for them.

Let’s imagine they all left home together for work and the children are going to school. What if they are not going in the same direction? Or probably the children's school is far from the parents place of work; would they go and drop them off and then turn back to their place of work?

I know most people would say the children will take the school bus, but we shouldn’t forget that it is not everyone that can afford the school bus fee of nowadays. I am sure the salary of the person driving the school bus is not up to one child’s school bus fee, and that is how costly it is.

I would have loved to support the idea of just one car, but then it is not advisable because both parents need a car for their work's sake, and that's why one car can never be enough for one family. At least two is enough since any one of the parents can easily take the children to school while the other one can go to work peacefully.

I don’t have a car yet, but I am sure managing just one car in the family is never, or let me say, will never be a good idea because I personally cannot cope with such a thing when I finally start having children.

It will certainly be troublesome to only have one car when they are going in the same direction unless the other one will have to use public transport.

Using public transport here in Nigeria is very risky especially when it involves kids

Oh I see. It was not as risky in Philippines but riding public transport here is like being inside canned sardines.

I understand all the scenarios here, having kids, and going different destinations and security risks, true all this can actually pose a threat,
But the Traffic Jams too is crazy and exhausting, too many vehicles on the road sometimes lead to accidents.

Yeah, there’s no doubt at that but if families stick to on car public transport people wouldn’t stop buying more vehicles since people that would be patronizing them will be much and they will still cause traffic at the end of the day.

Exactly, it seems the solution lies with a good public transportation system. The government needs to first solve the issue of public transportation system, if this is provided and accessible in all levels of the society and at affordable cost, the use of private cars for different purposes will reduce making it possible for a family to survive on just one car.
