ENG/ESP Lies of Omission: Deadly Poison, Always Boomerang

One popular Nigerian comedian named I Go Die said:

If you tell a lie, you will die, if you tell the truth, you will die, why not tell the truth and die.

Lies cannot be said to be good no matter what we are trying to defend. Sometimes, you will hear people talking about some kind of lies. They even originate some kind of funny names for lies. Names like white lies, holy lies, and what not comes to mind. Here is the thing. Anything that is not the truth is a lie no matter how we try to paint it.

I remember very well when I was in secondary school. My seat mate in SS2 was a girl named Billy. She was calm, respectful and brilliant. She was the very seatmate I needed at that time.
Billy was a good neighbour. She often helps me out when I forget some of my books in the class. She does not have any friends in the school. You can call her a lone ranger.

Billy was a house help who had no parents. Her boss was magnanimous enough to send her to school. Her appearance made her look like she was being abused or maltreated.

One day, she took courage to tell me how she was suspected to be a thief at home. Her boss's children always tried to implicate her. They would take some money from their mother's purse and drop it in her school bag just to make her look like a bad child. This made her feel bad and unwelcome to the house where she had served all her life. One thing she was grateful for was that her madam was not as wicked as the children.

On one occasion her boss caught her children taking some money from her purse. It was at this point that she knew that everything missing in the house was taken by her biological children. Lies can hurt, it could even make innocent people get punished for crimes they did not commit.
Some people believe that lies could help protect someone from unnecessary pain and hurt. To cover up for someone who has committed an offence so that he or she doesn't get punished could appear to be a good act but when the truth is revealed, the liar would be seen as being dishonest.

Sometimes, not giving a full version of an occurrence to avoid conflicts. This is why some organizations employ the services of an attorney who are professionally trained to mince words and intentionally commit lies of omission in their statement for their clients.

Also, to preserve someone's secrets or privacy, lies could be told or omissions could be made especially when the person involved is pursuing a political or public office or is of a high profile personality.

Couples also want to keep their relationship intact and as a result, there could be secrets or lies of omission from their partners.

Most of the embezzlements of public funds in our society today came as a result of lies of omission. The recent budget padding that is rocking the national assembly is a typical example.

However:

Shall we continue in sin, and say grace abound, God forbid.

Lying or deliberate omission of the truth is sin to God. Both spiritual and natural laws do not support lying.

When the truth is revealed over time, the one who has made lies of omission loses trust and credibility. This is why lies cannot be defended no matter what.

Lies make what is not real, real. It gives credence to what does not exist. This is why we need to stand on the truth no matter the circumstances.

Shying away from the truth is risky and would not give the liar an ample opportunity for growth and self-improvement. I feel that it is fair enough to feel the guilt of a wrong doing and be sober when making the necessary corrections.

When there are too many lies, the liar may lose track of his lies and remembering details may become difficult.

Let's not give life a good image by supporting that it is good. We would not be able to build an egalitarian society with such acts.

Mentiras de omisión: un veneno mortal, siempre bumerán

Un popular comediante nigeriano llamado I Go Die dijo:

Si mientes, morirás; si dices la verdad, morirás.

¿Por qué no decir la verdad y morir? No se puede decir que las mentiras sean buenas, por mucho que intentemos defenderlas. A veces, oirás a la gente hablar de algún tipo de mentira. Incluso inventan nombres graciosos para las mentiras. Se me ocurren nombres como mentiras piadosas, mentiras santas y demás. La cuestión es la siguiente: todo lo que no es verdad es mentira, por mucho que intentemos presentarlo. Recuerdo muy bien cuando estaba en secundaria. Mi compañera de asiento en SS2 era una chica llamada Billy. Era tranquila, respetuosa y brillante.

Era justo la compañera de asiento que necesitaba en ese momento. Billy era una buena vecina. A menudo me ayuda cuando olvido algunos libros en clase. No tiene amigos en la escuela. Podrías llamarla llanera solitaria.

Billy era una empleada doméstica sin padres. Su jefe tuvo la magnanimidad de mandarla a la escuela. Su apariencia la hacía parecer víctima de abuso o maltrato. Un día, se armó de valor para contarme que sospechaban que era una ladrona en casa. Los hijos de su jefe siempre intentaban implicarla.

Le sacaban dinero del bolso a su madre y lo metían en su mochila solo para que pareciera una niña mala. Esto la hacía sentir mal y no bienvenida en la casa donde había servido toda su vida. Algo por lo que agradecía era que su señora no fuera tan malvada como los niños. En una ocasión, su jefe sorprendió a sus hijos sacando dinero de su bolso. Fue entonces cuando supo que todo lo que faltaba en la casa se lo habían llevado sus hijos biológicos. Las mentiras pueden doler, incluso pueden hacer que personas inocentes sean castigadas por delitos que no cometieron.

Algunas personas creen que las mentiras pueden ayudar a proteger a alguien de dolor y sufrimiento innecesarios. Encubrir a alguien que ha cometido un delito para que no sea castigado puede parecer un buen acto, pero cuando se revela la verdad, el mentiroso puede ser visto como deshonesto.

A veces, no se da una versión completa de un suceso para evitar conflictos. Por eso, algunas organizaciones contratan a abogados con capacitación profesional para ser meticulosos y cometer mentiras por omisión intencionalmente en las declaraciones de sus clientes. Además, para preservar los secretos o la privacidad de alguien, se pueden decir mentiras u omitir, especialmente cuando la persona involucrada aspira a un cargo político o público o es una personalidad de alto perfil. Las parejas también desean mantener su relación intacta y, como resultado, podrían existir secretos o mentiras por omisión de sus parejas. La mayoría de las malversaciones de fondos públicos en nuestra sociedad actual se deben a mentiras por omisión. El reciente inflado presupuestario que está sacudiendo a la Asamblea Nacional es un ejemplo típico.

Sin embargo: > ¿Continuaremos en pecado y diremos que la gracia abunda, Dios no lo quiera? Mentir u omitir deliberadamente la verdad es pecado ante Dios. Tanto las leyes espirituales como las naturales no la respaldan. Cuando la verdad se revela con el tiempo, quien ha mentido por omisión pierde confianza y credibilidad. Por eso, las mentiras no se pueden defender, pase lo que pase. Las mentiras hacen real lo que no es real. Dan credibilidad a lo que no existe. Por eso debemos mantenernos firmes en la verdad, sin importar las circunstancias. Evitar la verdad es arriesgado y no le daría al mentiroso la oportunidad de crecer y superarse. Creo que es justo sentir la culpa por haber actuado mal y ser sobrio al hacer las correcciones necesarias. Cuando hay demasiadas mentiras, el mentiroso puede perder el hilo de sus mentiras y recordar los detalles puede volverse difícil. No demos una buena imagen de la vida al afirmar que es buena. No seríamos capaces de construir una sociedad igualitaria con tales actos.
