We can say that influence plays a major role in society through social media influencers, and perhaps what has changed over time is simply the medium being used as technology itself has evolved. Not too long ago, television played this role, and celebrities were the influencers of the time, just as radio had previously served this purpose. The media has always played this role in society, and in this scenario, where certain people are able to influence so many others, an important question about trustworthiness also arises. Do professionals who are also influencers have more credibility when it comes to what they are talking about than anonymous professionals who are far from fame and the spotlight?
Well, a professional who is also an influencer has a much greater responsibility than ordinary professionals, and that is undeniable. A mistake or inaccurate information can completely undermine all the credibility they have built, and perhaps for this reason, I could say that the information they provide may actually carry more weight. It is difficult for me to admit something like this, since I have a certain aversion to this whole environment, but we have to be realistic about these issues. The responsibility and even the extra care these professionals need to take can, in this regard, be something beneficial and bring greater trustworthiness to the information they share.
But that does not mean that ordinary professionals lack credibility in what they do. On the contrary, in many cases, we will find professionals who are just as good as, or even better than, influencers, and perhaps the only difference is the spotlight being placed on some people and not on everyone. There are many excellent and trustworthy professionals who, perhaps because they do not have good communication skills or simply do not want to be active on social media, end up being known only locally. And perhaps this is an interesting aspect when it comes to a professional's credibility: how well-known are they? Think about it. If a professional is frequently recommended and has a good reputation in their local area, even if on a much smaller scale than what can be achieved through social media, that can already be an indication that they are a good professional.
The question is: do I trust an influencer more, or a professional who is, let's say, more low-key? My answer is: it depends on the situation and what we are talking about. Some information can come from an influencer who genuinely has credibility on a particular subject, but that does not invalidate the information provided by another professional. When it comes to trust, both situations are subject to mistakes. So, I believe there are no guarantees. What we have is a difference in responsibility, especially for influencers, who constantly have to deal with a much bigger spotlight and a much larger audience.
Finally, I believe the best way to evaluate information is not simply to look at who is saying it, but to understand how much knowledge that person has about the subject and to look for different sources before forming an opinion. Fame can increase the reach of information, but it does not necessarily increase its quality. In the same way, being anonymous does not mean lacking knowledge. In the end, perhaps true credibility has less to do with how many people know a professional and more to do with their ability to provide accurate, responsible, and consistent information about what they actually know.
