Learn to master [EN/PT]

These past few days, I have been doing some self-reflection, especially about my ability to learn, and I came to the conclusion that this is an area I need to develop. It’s not that I’m incapable. I don’t see myself that way, but I genuinely feel that I could learn things faster and that, many times, I take too long. I have some difficulty learning certain specific subjects, especially when they involve more bureaucratic and administrative matters. Does that mean I can’t learn them? No, it simply means that I’m slower.

On the other hand, once I learn something, my ability to exceed expectations is always very strong. I really do take a long time to fully understand something, and perhaps this need to know everything down to the smallest detail, this perfectionism, gets in the way of my efficiency and the amount of time I need to learn. I can say that when I start something, my goal is not simply to learn it, but to master it. To be the best at it. I am competitive and, yes, I like to surpass my own results. And this has nothing to do with other people. It has to do with me. I like to surpass myself.

The most recent thing I have had difficulty truly learning is related to my area of work. I have been with this company and in this position for a little over two years and, unfortunately, I still haven’t completely mastered what I do. For the first time, considering everything I have done in my life so far, this is the place where I can say that I haven’t completely stood out, precisely because of this difficulty in mastering and learning exactly everything that my position involves. But it really is a complex job that requires knowledge of a vast amount of information, much of it constantly changing and rarely repetitive. The demands are always changing, procedures are constantly being updated, and all of this adds to the complexity.

Even so, I manage to be among the best on the team, although I always have this feeling that things aren’t going as well as they should. I can’t quite explain it. I do my best, but I always feel that I could do even better, and I never really have that complete sense of accomplishment. My numbers are good, and I have no problems with my productivity or results, but it is genuinely strange not to feel that I have completely mastered my role.

However, I have always found it somewhat easier to learn things that mainly depend on manual skills. Whatever it may be, I usually just need a period of adaptation and understanding of a particular activity, and in a short time I can learn it and develop the skill very well. After that, mastering it becomes simply a matter of time and how much I can practice. Perhaps this has a lot to do with my profile and the fact that I may have a greater inclination toward hands-on work than administrative activities.

But despite everything, I can also achieve good results once I master more bureaucratic and administrative tasks. That’s why I believe the biggest difference really lies in the learning curve. When it comes to more intellectual activities that require a lot of reasoning, analysis, and the famous burning of brain cells, I simply take much longer to learn than when I am dealing with practical and hands-on things.
