How far should we persist? [EN/PT]

Sometimes, being stubborn is exactly what we need to overcome something. We do not always realize that at the time because stubbornness is usually seen as something negative, as if it were simply an inability to accept different opinions or admit when we are wrong. But I think there is a difference between being stubborn out of pride and being stubborn because something inside us is telling us that it is not time to give up yet. Perhaps we have all gone through moments when continuing seemed difficult, but giving up was not an option and should not have been. In some cases, insisting is what allows us to get where we want to be. In others, however, that same persistence ends up hurting us because there is a very fine line between persisting in something important and simply refusing to accept that something is not working.

I think one of the best examples of stubbornness working in my favor was quitting smoking. After smoking for many years, half of my life, giving up that habit was not a simple decision. It was not just about stopping myself from buying cigarettes or deciding that I would never smoke again. There was a routine built over the years and specific moments associated with smoking. There were days when I thought it would be easier to simply give up on the attempt and continue as I had before. After all, I already knew that life and knew exactly what to expect from it. But, for some reason, I was stubborn. I decided I would not go back, even when I wanted to. And perhaps that is exactly where stubbornness made a difference because I was not always motivated. I did not always feel strong. Sometimes, continuing was simply a matter of holding on for one more day. Then another one. And another. In the end, I realized that not every victory happens in a grand way. Sometimes, winning is simply refusing to go back to something you know you need to leave behind. My stubbornness helped me because I was using it against a problem I genuinely wanted to overcome.

But I have also realized that being stubborn can make things worse. I think we have all insisted on situations that, looking back, were already lost long before we decided to stop. Relationships can be like that, whether with friends or girlfriends, and I had a relationship like that many years ago, in which I was stubborn, believing that things would get better. Well, they did not. If a decision had been made earlier, a lot of pain could have been avoided, and perhaps my life would have taken a different direction sooner or other opportunities might have appeared. But the truth is that we only really know these things afterward, when we can look at everything from the outside. In the moment, it is difficult to have a clearer understanding of our decisions, whether we should continue being stubborn about something or simply put an end to it.

Both situations taught me something important. Persisting and giving up are not as simple as opposites. Sometimes, giving up is the worst possible choice. At other times, continuing is simply a way of prolonging a problem. I think growing up also means learning to recognize that difference. Today, I try to understand whether I am insisting because I truly believe in something or simply because my pride does not want to accept another possibility. I still believe that stubbornness can be a great strength because some achievements really require us to keep going even when everything seems difficult. But I have also learned that recognizing when it is time to stop does not mean weakness. Perhaps true intelligence lies in knowing when our stubbornness is taking us forward and when we are simply insisting on walking in the wrong direction.

Nem sempre eu me sentia forte.

As duas situações me ensinaram algo importante.
