Perhaps one of the biggest challenges we face in life is building friendships that last forever. Have you ever stopped to think about how many friends we had as children and how that number gradually decreases as time goes by? We reach adulthood and are left with about as many friends as the fingers on one of our hands. The good thing is that technology, in a way, can help us maintain a little more closeness with our friends, even when they live far away, and for those who have few friends or have difficulty making new ones, it makes things even easier. Could it be that the way the world has become so advanced really affects our relationships in a negative way?
Well, I'm one of those people who rarely meets friends in person and who, virtually, ends up being the one who receives messages and rarely sends them. At the moment, I can say that I'm a little different from that, because I'm changing things up a bit and experiencing new expectations. I'm trying to socialize more with old friends and trying to make new ones, and I have to admit that the internet has made my life much easier. It hasn't even been a week since I started this journey, and I can already say that I'm creating some really interesting friendships, and that's saying something considering I've always had difficulty making new friends. Perhaps when we find ourselves feeling lonely, we take the initiative to do something about it, and well, I can say that technology helps quite a lot.
But just as I think technology makes it easier to create new friendships and stay in touch, it doesn't replace being together in person. They are completely different experiences, and having one doesn't mean the other needs to disappear. We just need to know how to use each moment in the right way. If being physically close to someone is a great experience, doing it virtually can be too. I know that we often think things have to be black or white, all or nothing, but they don't. Why not make everything work together toward the same goal? It's good to maintain online friendships, and it's good to talk to friends in person.
Yes, there are times when our friends are exclusively online. Here on Hive, for example, I have great friends who live in Brazil and whom I know I will probably never meet in person. Of course, Brazil is a huge country, and I don't only have friends from Brazil. I also have friends scattered around the world, and that's really cool. If it weren't for the internet, would I have had this experience? If I decided that friendship only counts when you meet someone in person, none of this would be part of my story. So, I think things can simply adapt to the way they need to. Some friends are only online, and some friends are only in person, and that's perfectly fine. If we can bring some balance to everything in our lives, well, things would be a lot lighter!
At the end of the day, I don't think friendship should be defined by distance or by the way we keep in touch, but by the importance that person has in our lives. Some friendships will happen in person, while others will be born through a screen and may never go beyond that space, but that doesn't make them any less real. Technology can bring people who are far away closer, while meeting in person can create moments that stay with us forever. Perhaps the secret is precisely not choosing between one thing or the other, but making the most of each possibility and allowing people to enter and remain in our lives in whatever way is possible.
