Choices and addictions [EN/PT]

Is being addicted a choice? Many may say no, that it is a condition and that no one chooses to live trapped in something that harms them. Who could give up their life because of such a cruel condition? We almost immediately associate addictions with drugs, and it is true that this is the most impactful one, because the deterioration of a person addicted to narcotics is truly visible. But there are those who are addicted to pornography, to work, and even to their phones. Can we say, then, that these people chose to live dependent in this way?

I do not know if being addicted to something is really a choice or not, but, with all certainty, the path that leads to this extreme is made up of choices. Are circumstances, moments, or even our psychological state what guide the way we see things, to the point that we make the worst decisions and, consequently, become addicted? Or are we so naive that we believe this will never happen to us? I will tell a little of my story, and perhaps this will become clearer.

Since I was a child, my mother warned me about drugs. Even though she was a humble person, there was one thing she knew: that path gave nothing to anyone. And I really did stay away from drugs. For a long time, I had an unexplainable fear of becoming addicted to drugs, but I was never warned about cigarettes. My mother forgot about that. She smoked, I watched her smoke, and while she told me to be careful with drugs, perhaps she took a drag from her cigarette, and that was normal to me. The danger was marijuana and cocaine.

I always hated cigarettes, not because of the harm they cause, but because of the horrible smell that remained in my room when my mother went there. That hatred ended up becoming love, and when a friend offered me a cigarette, I accepted it and never stopped. I never stopped until the beginning of this year. It has now been seven months since I stopped smoking, after 18 years, half of my life. When I took that first drag, I did not imagine how difficult it would be to leave this addiction behind, because those who are addicted enjoy doing it. After all, we only become addicted to what is truly pleasurable, and it is difficult to give up pleasures. It is difficult to try to cut a chain that holds us through chemical dependence. An addiction is terrible to leave behind and, when we manage to leave it behind, it also leaves marks that are difficult to deal with. Only God knows what I have been going through these past few months.

But, anyway, it was a choice back in the past. If I had said no, how many things could have been different? We are naive when we are younger and, when we are older, we pay the price for that naivety. So, it was one choice after another until addiction became a reality. I can say that I did not choose to become addicted, but I knew the risks and continued anyway. My mother did not give me advice about cigarettes, and I chose to look at the example, but even so, they were choices.

But did I choose to remain addicted? Yes, I chose to remain addicted for 18 years, until the choice to no longer be addicted came. Of course, I cannot generalize and say that only those who want to are in this situation, because there are many factors that determine, make it harder, or make it easier for a person to be able or not to leave an addiction behind.

I had support, I had the conditions, and I allowed myself to try, fail, and then try again until, finally, I managed to quit smoking. But I CHOSE to no longer be an addict. So, in my opinion, we cannot judge those who are chemically dependent or addicted, but we also cannot allow that person to see themselves only as a victim, because choices are made to begin and also to end, and each person is responsible for their own. Perhaps we do not choose to become dependent, but there always comes a moment when we need to choose whether we will remain trapped or whether we will try to find freedom.
