We can say that evolution is a natural miracle that has extended our time on Earth. But looking to the future, we can imagine a few different directions. Will we continue to evolve, or will we regress?

Honestly, I believe that the peak of our intellectual evolution already happened in the 2000s. Since then, technology has become an essential part of our lives, helping us in many ways. However, I see that when we have something that can think for us, facilitating reasoning and logical tasks, our brains are no longer encouraged to think and develop. We are increasingly dependent on technology for this, and how will we continue to evolve intellectually if we no longer perform activities that encourage this progression? The scenario is becoming increasingly worse in this regard, especially with the advancement of artificial intelligence, which is doing all the creative work for us.

Of course, we are living in a surreal moment compared to any other era of humanity due to this technology. It helps us, speeds us up, and offers us better results in everything. But what about us? We are stagnant and, perhaps, regressing. Evolution stopped a few years ago, and we will no longer move beyond this milestone. Of course, I am speaking in a natural and even biological sense, but perhaps we are “evolving” with the help of artificial intelligence. Do you doubt that we can evolve biologically with technological interventions, such as genetic engineering? I do not doubt it. It will not be a natural evolution, but it will still be an evolution.

The big question so far is that we are totally dependent on technology itself for our evolution. Until now, we have evolved because of human nature itself and more “archaic” technologies, but I believe that from now on, we will only really evolve with a crutch called technology. With each generation, logical, physical, and wisdom skills are being lost. An example: do you know how to make fire without using a tool? If all matches, lighters, or anything else that generates fire were extinct, would you be able to light a fire to cook food? Probably not. You don't know how to do something that “underdeveloped” humans millions of years ago knew how to do. And that's how I see our current technology: we will reach a point where we will be so dependent on it that, if some catastrophe occurs and it becomes extinct, we will be less developed than cavemen and will not know how to do basic and necessary things on our own.

Strange, isn't it? We are evolving to the point of creating our own prison. Absolute dependence on technology, according to the path we are on, could really be the end of humanity if something happens to technology. So, are we really evolving, or are we just evolving our tools and standing still in time?

Honestly, I don't know what the next step in our evolution will be, because I believe that this growing scale has already reached its peak. Technological interventions carried out directly on our genetics and biology can really make us evolve artificially, making everything I've said here obsolete, but will that really happen? Or rather, even if that point can be reached, won't it already be too late?
