It’s been almost 3 years since I became a graduate and ever since then, I’m just grateful that I acquired formal education when I did because right now, I don’t think that is a process I want to repeat again. Acquiring a degree here in my country is not as useful and easy as it use to be anymore. There are so many responsibilities that come with acquiring a degree and looking at the way things are currently, a degree is not as worth it as it was years back.
That being said, I think education could be worth it but it depends on individual preferences at different times. For a child still in secondary school, they are most likely more interested in going to the university or a polytechnic to acquire a degree for themselves and that is because at that point they don’t have any reason to doubt that that’s the best way to go.
As soon as they are done with school and they don’t get into the university according to how they have planned it, they start thinking subconsciously of other ways out. We are in the jet age and the truth is that there are so many ways we can acquire different degrees without following the formal system. We could apply for courses online and that can help us become useful people in our society even more than some formal degrees we carry around.
Since I finished school, I haven’t been able to practice what I went to school to learn for over 4 years. Immediately I finished I stayed at home for over a year before I finally went to serve my country. When I was done with that, I went to acquire a skill for some months which is not related in any way to the degree I have acquired. But that doesn’t mean I regret acquiring the degree but if I’m to choose now whether or not to acquire a formal degree, I know I’ll think really well about it and put so many things into consideration. Except I’ll be acquiring that degree outside my country.
I don’t just feel there is more to be done in the school system. I know there is more to be done and if there is anything I’ll like to suggest to help things get better, it is that parents should guide their children, not dictate every thing for them. A lot of parents want their children to live their dreams for them which is not helpful at all. This act doesn’t just end in the home, those children grow up to become leaders in different areas of life and they often tend to keep spreading those wrong ideas to the next generation.
If any change will occur, it has to begin first from the most basic unit of the society which is the family. Parents should guide their children to make the right choices, not making the choices for them. Because if they keep making the choices for these children, they end up becoming too dependent and when they are left with no choice but to make their own decisions, they make terrible choices that don’t only affect them but everyone around them.

Acquiring degrees is no longer as it used to be. So much has changed and until the normal system we are use to changes, we will just keep declining the interest of so many in formal education.
