When Ideals Clash: Should Friendships End?

(edited)

While everyone has their beliefs and opinions, I feel it’s cowardice to end a friendship simply because they differ from yours.

I think one thing I have come to understand and accept as I got older is that everybody is different.

Even in marriage, you can't expect your mannerisms or beliefs to be the same your partner.

Even twins raised by the same parent and same environmental factors often do not share the same opinion or beliefs.

Maturity is understanding that you should always respect another person's ideal no matter how bizarre it may sound because we all have different experiences, and also how we respond to the situations in our environment is quite different.

Story Time

Earlier this year, during exams in school (Unilag), I shared a hostel room with my friend Genius.

One Sunday, we were chilling in the room, and something brought up a conversation about birthdays. He is a Jehovah's Witness, and they have a belief of not celebrating birthdays. I respected that totally. I am big on birthdays, and I celebrate them, but now I have a friend that believes they hold no significance.

It would be wrong for me to start convincing him to celebrate birthdays or to tell him he has a weird belief or even unfriend him because of that. Instead we just interacted more about the topic, and I was just keen on knowing why he believes that or if there is a scripture that justifies his beliefs.

The same thing happens here on Hive blockchain, there are people with very different beliefs. I have read posts where some believe that being an engager alone on Hive is like you're only a consumer of Hive, and they aren't keen on upvoting those users, while some other set of people here on Hive respect and know that being an engager and cooking up interesting and well-articulated posts is quite credible too.

Not everyone wants to be a Hive witness or be a moderator or start a new community. Some of us just like to read other people's posts, learn from them, and also cook up our own. Some of us too just like to come and show off our milestones on Hive or even our personal growth or daily activities. As I said, maturity is just understanding that everyone has their own beliefs and ideals.

You shouldn't hate or decide to stop being friends with someone just because of that. I personally would never end my friendship just because our beliefs or ideals differ. Instead, I would respect your opinion as long as it's not something that is generally known as illegal or morally wrong. For example, I won't respect someone's opinion on beating women or breaking laws or killing, you get it?

Conclusion

Let's all try to be more tolerant with ourselves and spread love instead.

Life is too short to stress about whose ideals are right or wrong and then decide to pick a fight when they don't align with ours.

I agree with you on the fact that difference shouldn't lead to end of relationship, we must learn to respect peoples differences.

Thank you very much

Yes, I like to preserve relationships. I don't believe in just ending it over little disputes or inconveniences or even different opinions shared

Well I think it's a tight rope. If you and your friend are getting into disagreements way too often that you can't hold a normal conversation, then I guess it is in the best interests for both of you to avoid conversing at all. It'll save your time and energy. But if you two can put your differences aside for getting work done and then I guess it's livable.

Yeah, you are right
If you notice that trying to hold the bond isn't working and its costing you your mental health, then its wise to walkaway

I guess I wrote my post based on the people I have around me. A simple discussion makes us come to understanding

But if the your opinion lead to argument often, because their are some people that want you to accept their opinions instead of respecting it.

This is right.
Not everyone is the same but it is nice to always respect other people's views as long as it is not illegal.
I totally agree with you.
