What We Have Now Is A Shadow Of Itself

Education in my country is now a personal pursuit, especially in my area. The last JAMB left us with this conclusion. During my days the cutoff for gaining admission into the university was 200 and above, but in this present day, now with even 150 as a cutoff, one could gain admission to the university.The heartbreaking thing is now that there are those who have far below the cutoff for a particular university and course of study, but they still gained the admission because of another factor. Casting my mind back to the days after I sat for JAMB for the third time, when I approached the VC's office, the secretary demanded why I didn't come over to the school for a follow-up. Of a truth I never knew that after writing the UTME AND POST UTME I would still need to be in school for a follow-up.

Everyone is not allowed to pursue the course of their choice just like that. In my country there are certain courses that are reserved for the big people in the system. If you don't have a godfather or mother who is well-mouthed, you won't be able to study some courses. Many people with high hopes and dreams in a particular course have been forced into another department. They had their choice, but the choice of the university prevailed over theirs. Some people who have the money for a private school go ahead to study the course of their choice without delay.

Most times some students are frustrated out of school because of the unending strife of the institutions in my country. The educational system is just a shadow of itself. If you really want your kids to perform extremely well, you just have to put in more effort to make sure it happens, or else the rest becomes a story. Talking about if everyone is allowed to study any course of their choice, not minding the gender, I will say to a good extent there are no gender limitations when it has to do with the course of study. Unless it is in existence in some parts of the nation that I am not aware of.

There is this special joy that resonates in one heart when he is allowed to study what he truly has in mind to study. From my personal observation, those that tend to go to school mostly are women, as the giants want to make money because they believe that the end of all is money and the ability to put food on the table. Many men believe that with their money they can get married to any kind of lady they want to, while a broke guy may be robbed of his desired lady.

In all, I wish that there be a true transformation of the educational system because the decadence is increasing, and if things should continue the way they are going today, it may come to a point that even a student with less than 50 will gain admission into the university. If the weakness in the educational sector should continue, it will directly affect other aspects of the country.
