In the past, people used to talk with each other more and sit and chit-chat. There were not many ways of entertainment, so this was the very common way they engaged with each other. With the development of technology, radio and television came into existence and became the most frequent forms of entertainment. I remember when I was a kid, TV shows were broadcast for a very limited time, like in the morning and evening. Over time, they became available 24 hours a day to entertain people. Initially, programs were informative and news-oriented; then, over time, drama and comedy shows came into existence as people liked such content more.
In recent days, a new trend has become popular: reality shows. As I remember, reality shows started by showing talent, and participants received rewards for their extraordinary abilities. In India, Indian Idol was very famous, which was actually a singing competition. Participants were selected through an audition and then competed with each other. The judges gave marks after their performances, and the participants who got the lowest marks were eliminated each round. The audience's voting also mattered, as they influenced the final results of the elimination.
In a similar way, another reality show was India's Got Talent, which did not focus on just one talent. People showed their talents from different areas like singing, dancing, playing instruments, painting, aerobics, physical strength, etc. They participated solo or in groups. This was very interesting and entertaining as the audience was not just listening to songs or watching dance; it targeted a mixed audience, so it got a very good response. I also used to watch the show and liked it very much. There were some more similar shows targeting specific audiences, like cooking or talk shows, and over time, they grew in number and popularity.

There was a time when a new type of reality show came into the picture, which was more focused on personal lives, relationship drama, luxury lifestyles, etc. They did not have anything to do with talent; they were focused on artificial drama and did anything to make it more "spicy." I remember a few names of such reality shows: Bigg Boss, Emotional Atyachar, Splitsvilla, Roadies, etc. Bigg Boss was one that was very famous and was frequently in the highlights for vulgar comments, abuse, and similar activities. Even with such criticism, the show was very famous among people. It became the reason for many new relationships and break-ups between participants and also gave name and fame to many participants.
But if you ask me, I followed a few seasons, but afterward, I lost interest. The main reason was that it looked more scripted than reality, and people stooped to a very low level to stay on the show, which had a very bad effect on the people watching. Similarly, Emotional Atyachar was all about testing the relationship of a couple, but the way they went about it was very odd. One of the crew members would connect with one partner and become their friend. Then they would try to check if the partner was loyal to the other partner by proposing to them. Many times it created very awkward situations. At first, it looked very entertaining and funny, but when you think deeply, it is very bad to interfere in someone's personal life, record it, and show it to the audience.

It is clear that how entertainment has evolved from social interaction to talent shows and, eventually, to more controversial "drama-based" reality TV.
In my opinion, we cannot stop such content as there is an audience which likes watching it. So, it is a personal decision for everyone whether they want to watch it or not. It is a matter of opinion, and there is always a difference of opinions. For me, it is okay; as long as no one is forcing me to watch them, I am okay with it. But yes, we should be careful when talking about teenagers and kids, as they get influenced very easily and do not have much life experience. There are high chances that they get distracted from their main goals.
