Before now, what I used to believe is that saying someone is my role model, the person's life must have reached a point worth copying. An individual who is already settled down with much success stories to talk about confidently. And presently, I do not have all those things. I still have a lot of decisions I am still making, making amendments of my mistakes and learning how to stand by those decisions. So after I saw this topic if I can be a role model to someone, I cannot give a direct yet without having a second thought.
And if a younger person comes to me for mentorship, I sometimes wonder what my response will be. Because I will first wonder what the person has seen in me to have said that, in a way that I am still trying to understand a lot of things myself. And I will not want the person to mistake my confidence in a particular area for wisdom in every area. That alone is how most people can pass their confusion down while calling it guidance.
But I will not decline the mentorship. I will only accept with honesty about what I can truly offer. What I know and what I have learnt, I can share those, give an explanation about some decisions I got wrong in the past and help him think through the decisions I understand best.
And when I am not sure about something, without any answer, I will tell him. That is important. Because when a mentor pretends to have an answer to everything just to impress others for a while, but can make that person afraid to ask questions.

Somethings, when we look at some people and how progressive they are, it might look like they have never struggled. We only see the end products of their works and not the extra hours, work and repeated corrections, delayed plans or the difficulties they faced to start again. And if it happens I have to mentor anyone, those are the things I will show to them not the bed of roses. And I will not want him to agree always with me, he should be free to disagree from his own perspective. Because the aim is not to give birth to another small version of myself but himself in full form.
And if I finally agree to mentor anyone, I will not pretend like I have my life figured out. And maybe me becoming a role model does not need that. And looking at it from another perspective, it might require someone taking me ordinary life as extraordinary, even privately.
Personally, I will take up the tasks and works that comes with it, not because I am finished, but because the best thing to do is for me to be honest about the part of me this I am still working on.
