Human Nature and the Need for Society

The fundamental requirement of human nature is that a person always wants to live together with other human beings. This is not merely a choice, but an essential part of human survival and evolution. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle stated, “Man is a social animal.” This is not just a sentence or a philosopher’s opinion, but a comprehensive definition of human existence. It means that human identity, happiness, and development depend entirely on relationships connected to society.

If we reflect carefully, we realize that no part of our life is complete without the cooperation of other people. From our morning tea to our evening meal, from conversation to daily dealings, from education to health, everything is the result of a vast social network. Farmers, laborers, teachers, doctors, and engineers together fulfill our everyday needs. This mutual dependence has shaped our collective life in the form of families, communities, towns, and eventually modern cities and states.

Rights, Duties, and the Question of Freedom

However, when we study human nature more deeply, we find that after collective life, the next stage becomes more important. Wherever there is social life, the concept of rights and duties automatically comes into existence. There is a social contract that may not be written anywhere, yet it is firmly engraved in everyone’s heart.

For a human being, life and property are extremely important. Thus, every person has the right to protect their life, property, and honor, and to make every possible effort to do so. Similarly, every human being is conscious and possesses intellect and reason, therefore everyone should have the freedom to express their thoughts and use their abilities.

At the same time, a question arises. If every individual claims absolute freedom on this basis, what will happen? One person’s right will become a danger to another. The strong will crush the weak, and chaos will spread everywhere. To avoid this possible situation of the law of the jungle, human intellect discovered a solution: the determination of certain rules and regulations for collective benefit. These determined principles form the foundation of law.

Crime, Law, and Social Response

It is extremely important to understand that law is not merely a collection of words written on paper. There is a historical relationship between crime and law. In reality, law is the collective response to social problems and crimes. In simple words, crimes give birth to law. When incidents such as theft, fraud, or violence occur in society, society draws a boundary to protect itself, which takes the form of law.

For example, financial fraud led to the emergence of cybercrime laws, and environmental pollution gave rise to environmental protection laws. The same story applies to other laws as well.

Law as Guidance and Collective Stability

At this point, we must also understand that human nature is imperfect. Humans make mistakes, consciously or unconsciously. In such a situation, law does not function only as a stick, but also plays the role of a teacher and guide. It teaches us a basic moral principle that your freedom actually ends where another person’s limits begin. Your rights are as sacred as your neighbor’s rights. The real requirement of living in society is to respect the rights of others along with your own.

In simple words, this entire system of human relationships is based on a deep continuity. If we view this whole process logically, the picture appears as follows. Human nature forms society. Society provides us with the concept of rights and duties. Some people fail to fulfill these duties. Violation of rights leads to the emergence of crimes. To prevent crimes, the enforcement of laws is necessary. Enforcement of laws guarantees collective protection and justice. Collective protection and justice form a stable society.

In short, the social nature of human beings is a great blessing, and law is an essential requirement to preserve this blessing. Law is not merely a stick or a restriction, but a guiding principle that saves society from chaos and destruction, protects the weak from the oppression of the strong, and guarantees a peaceful collective life based on justice. It is that indispensable pillar of human civilization without which the structure of society can collapse. Therefore, obeying the law is not merely a state order, but a true requirement of human nature for collective survival, integrity, and progress. It is this collective consciousness that teaches us to overcome our individual weaknesses and moves us toward a better future.
