EN-PT What we don't learn from wars
Wars are terrible. Power struggles are always tragic and leave their marks on society. The people involved will forever carry the weight of pain, loss, and the burden of starting over. That's because in every war, it's the people who fight, the people who lose everything they have, and the people who die. They lose, fight, and die for a cause they are not even sure they believe in.
Whose interest does a war serve, if not for power?
The fight for territory, in my humble ignorance, I believed had ended long ago. And then we see Russia trying to annex part of Ukraine. We also have our own example in Latin America, with Venezuela intending to annex territory from Guyana. These are recent tensions—one has already been in a state of war for years, while the other could erupt at any moment.
In Kant’s words:
The state of peace among men living side by side is not the natural state (status naturalis); the natural state is rather one of war. That is, although actual hostilities may not be ongoing, the threat is ever-present.

Territorial wars have happened in the past, and the outcome is always the same, as with any war for any reason. Territory is power—especially if there is oil beneath the ground. I'm not accusing any North American country. :)
Humanity hasn’t learned from past wars and doesn’t seem to realize that the cycle always repeats. Tension, war, reconstruction, and the quest for power resumes. I feel deeply saddened by this kind of situation, because I understand there's a massive gap between the interests of rulers and the people. Those who decide and control the weapons are not on the battlefield; they're sitting at majestic tables, wearing medals and decorations. They send their people to die in the name of conquest. And even when they don't send them directly, they still put them at risk of being attacked in their own homes.
Civilians die in wars, and they die by the thousands.
Children die in wars—some even fight!
People die in wars—ask the exterminated Indigenous peoples.
And in the end, the positive result is the conquest of a territory that must be rebuilt upon the ashes and blood of those who fought to defend it or to conquer it. Imagine that what we used to call the Gaza Strip is now a vast ruin of debris. It no longer looks like a city, a home. Absolutely nothing is left. Everything is destroyed.
Then, at some point, the reconstruction will begin, which will cost a lot—whoever ends up paying for it. But it will never cost as much as the lives that were sacrificed in the name of a power struggle.
Off-topic
Out of curiosity, I checked and found that territorial disputes still exist even in Brazil, which has unresolved claims from Uruguay, for example. From my reading, I learned that these claims often remain unaddressed just to avoid harming diplomatic relations. But when there's economic interest involved, we usually go to war, like in the case of the Falkland Islands, which belong to Argentina and were invaded by the British, who now exploit oil there as if they own the place (even though they’re thousands of kilometers away from their own land).
Terríveis são as guerras. As lutas pelo poder são sempre trágicas, e deixam suas marcas na sociedade. Os povos envolvidos carregarão para sempre o peso da dor, da perda, e o fardo de recomeçar. Isso porque em todas as guerras quem luta é o povo, quem perde tudo que tem é o povo, e quem morre é o povo. Perder, lutar e morrer por uma causa que não temos certeza se de fato acreditam.
A qual interesse serve uma guerra, se não pelo poder?
A luta por território, eu na minha humilde ignorância, acreditei que tinha encerrado a muito tempo. E então vemos a Rússia querendo anexar parte da Ucrânia. Também temos nosso exemplo na América Latina, com a Venezuela pretendendo anexar território da Guiana. Essas são tensões recentes, sendo que uma já se encontra em estado de guerra a anos, enquanto a outra pode explodir a qualquer momento.

O estado de paz entre os homens que vivem juntos não é um estado de natureza (status naturalis), o qual é antes um estado de guerra, isto é, um estado em que, embora não exista sempre uma explosão das hostilidades, há sempre todavia uma ameaça constante.

Guerras por território já ocorreram no passado, e o resulto é sempre o mesmo, como em qualquer guerra por qualquer outro motivo. Território é poder, ainda mais se embaixo do solo existir petróleo. Não estou acusando país nenhum da América do norte :)
A humanidade não aprendeu com as guerras do passado e parece que não percebe que o ciclo sempre se repete. Tensão, guerra, reconstrução, busca pelo poder recomeça. Eu fico muito triste com esse tipo de situação, pois entendo que existe um abismo entre o interesse dos governantes e do povo. Aqueles que decidem e que controlam as armas não estão no front de batalha, e sim sentados em mesas majestosas, usando medalhas e condecorações. Eles enviam seu povo para morte em nome de um desejo de conquista. E quando não enviam, literalmente, colocam o povo em risco de ser atacado em seu lar.
Civis morrem em guerras, e morrem aos milhares.
Crianças morrem em guerras, algumas também lutam!
Povos morrem em guerras, pergunte para os indígenas exterminados.
E no fim, o resultado ~positivo~ é a conquista de um território, que deve ser reconstruindo sobre as cinzas e sangues daqueles que lutaram para defendê-lo e para conquistá-lo. Imaginem vocês que a aquilo que chamávamos de Faixa de Gaza agora é uma grande ruína de destroços. Não parece mais uma cidade, um lar. Não sobrou absolutamente nada. Tudo está destruído.
Então em algum momento começará a reconstrução, que custará muito para quem quer que for pagar por isso. Mas não custará tanto quanto as vidas que foram sacrificadas em nome da disputa de poder.
Off-topic
Por questão de curiosidade, verifiquei que as disputas por território ainda existem mesmo com o Brasil, que tem pontos de reclamação por parte do Uruguai, por exemplo. Lendo a respeito, descobri que muitas vezes essas reclamações não são resolvidas nem respondidas no sentido de não prejudicar as relações diplomáticas. Mas quando existe interesse econômico por trás, geralmente vamos às guerras, como é o caso das ilhas Malvinas, que pertencem à Argentina, e foram invadidas pelos ingleses, que estão lá explorando petróleo como se dono fossem (mesmo estando a milhares de quilômetros de distância de sua terra).

As much as possible we avoid debates that lead to war, war is not the best way to solve problems, the diplomatic path is highly recommended to break a deadlock
Regular people just want to live regular lives. They want to make money and cater to their families. Many wouldn't even mind if other countries fell off the face of the earth, as long as it had nothing to do with them. However, those in power keep looking for wars to fight in. And they don't fight it themselves, they send in young soldiers who give their lives for a cause that's not theirs. Civilians pay the price, while the generals make more war commands in armoured bunkers. It's painful.
