EN-PT I will recreate the internet!
A few days ago, there was a power outage in my neighborhood. It's rare, but it happens. Usually, we desperately need to do something important and get really annoyed about having to wait or miss our timing. That's just the impression we get it's not a big deal but since we're so connected to the global computer network, we end up feeling the effects of forced abstinence.
I managed to get around the power outage issues by installing a UPS device specifically for the network equipment. It was very easy, and I’ve been using it for many years. I’m already on my third device, because I initially bought a used one and ran a few tests. Then I bought a robust, powerful device, and it literally boiled it overheated and the battery melted. That second device seems to still be working fine; all it would take is a gel battery. But I decided to set it aside and bought a small, simple one instead. The third device is doing very well, and I got it at a very attractive promotional price!
But soon I realized I could do more, so I thought about getting a higher capacity battery to also power my television. It would be nice to watch movies and series while the neighborhood is in the dark. I quickly adapted an external battery to the UPS, ran some tests, and was very pleased!
Then I realized I could redirect some lights from the house’s lighting network to a battery-powered circuit. So I decided to expand my project and bought an inverter, which could deliver much more power than the UPS. I split the systems into two:
- Simple UPS for network equipment and an old notebook acting as a media server
- Manually operated inverter for the television, a lamp, and water pressurization in the house.
Now I can take hot showers even when there’s no electricity in the neighborhood, thanks to two car batteries powering an inverter that supplies electricity to two motors: a pressurizer and a hot water circulator.
Of course, hot water depends on the sun, so I always keep some in stock. When it's winter, cold days, or rainy weeks, an electric heater kicks in, and in that case, I have no backup, I need power from the utility company to heat the water!
So, when asked to reflect on what I’d do if the online universe disappeared, I have no doubt that I could recreate a small computer network. I already have a small internal network, and on it, I run a very good media server, with an interface similar to Netflix. I could serve content to my neighbors via wired network.
Additionally, I have a stockpile of second-hand routers, equipment that I used before my current upgrade. They can be useful to extend my network and carry signal a few meters ahead via cable, where it could then become wireless for end users. I have a few meters of network cable. I have a crimping tool for network cables.
I have a backup laptop (partially broken, but functional), I have batteries, I have a solar panel, I have offline backup media files.
I can only hope this never happens, but if a digital apocalypse does occur, I can recreate a small world for a small community to relive the nostalgia of what global networks once were!
Conclusion
I could still sell fruit plant seedlings, as I already do with banana trees, and also do woodworking, as I’ve shared in previous posts building reclaimed wood benches and other small home projects. In fact, in the coming days, you’ll see my latest DIY project that I plan to post on Sunday, if I have the time! If the plan to recreate the internet fails, who knows, I might become a carpenter!
Alguns dias atrás aconteceu de faltar energia elétrica no meu bairro. Isso é raro, mas acontece. Geralmente estamos precisando muito fazer alguma coisa importante e ficamos muito irritados por ter que esperar ou perder a hora. Isso é uma impressão que temos, na verdade não é nada de mais, mas como somos muito ligados nas rede mundial de computadores, acabamos sentindo os efeitos da abstinência forçada.
Eu consegui contornar os problemas de falta de energia elétrica instalando um equipamento nobreak especialmente para os equipamentos de rede. Isso foi muito fácil, e estou usando a muitos anos. Já estou no terceiro equipamento, pois inicialmente comprei um usado e fiz alguns testes. Depois comprei um equipamento robusto, poderoso, e ele ferveu, literalmente, ele superaqueceu e a bateria derreteu. Este segundo equipamento parece estar funcionando normalmente, bastaria adquirir uma bateria de gel, mas resolvi deixar ele de lado e comprei um pequeno e simples. O terceiro equipamento está indo muito bem e teve o preço promocional muito atrativo!
Mas logo me dei conta que eu poderia fazer algo a mais, então pensei em ter uma bateria de maior capacidade para sustentar também minha televisão. Seria bom poder assistir filmes e séries enquanto o bairro estava no escuro. Logo eu resolvi adaptar uma bateria externa ao nobreak e fiz alguns testes e fiquei muito satisfeito!
Mas logo me dei conta que eu poderia desviar algumas lâmpadas da rede de iluminação da casa para uma rede alimentada pelas baterias. Então decidi ampliar meu projeto e adquiri um inversor, que poderia entregar muito mais potência do que o nobreak. Separei os sistemas em dois:
- Nobreak simples para equipamentos de rede e um notebook antigo que faz papel de servidor de mídias
- Inversor de acionamento manual para televisão, uma luminária, e pressurização de água da casa.
Agora eu posso tomar banho quente mesmo quando não há energia elétrica na vizinhança, graças às minhas duas baterias de automóveis que alimentam um inversor que fornece energia para dois motores: um pressurizador e um circulador de água quente.
É claro que a água quente depende do Sol, então sempre tenho alguma coisa em estoque. Quando estamos no inverno ou em dias frios e semanas chuvosas, uma resistência elétrica entra em ação, e neste caso eu não tenho backup: preciso aquecer a água com energia da concessionária!
Então quando propuseram refletir sobre o que faria se o universo online desaparecesse, eu não tenho dúvidas que eu poderia recriar uma pequena rede de computadores. Eu já tenho uma pequena rede interna e nela eu tenho um servidor de mídia muito bom, parecido com a interface da netflix. Eu poderia servir conteúdo para os vizinhos por rede cabeada.
Além disso eu tenho um estoque de roteadores de segunda mão, que eram os equipamentos de meu próprio uso, antes do upgrade atual. Eles podem ser úteis para estender a minha rede e levar sinal para alguns metros adiante, via cabo, onde poderiam enfim tornar o sinal sem fio para usuários finais. Eu tenho alguns metros de cabo de rede. Eu tenho uma alicate de crimpagem de cabos de rede.
Tenho notebook reserva (parcialmente quebrado, mas funciona), tenho bateria, tenho placa solar, tenho arquivos de mídia offline em backup.
Eu só posso desejar que não aconteça, mas se o apocalipse digital acontecer, eu posso recriar um pequeno mundo para uma pequena comunidade viver a nostalgia que as redes mundiais foram!
Conclusão
Eu ainda poderia vender mudas de plantas frutíferas, como já faço com bananeiras, e também trabalhos manuais com madeira, como já fiz algumas postagens aqui montando bancos de madeira de demolição e outras pequenas obras domésticas. Inclusive nos próximos dias devemos ver minha última produção DIY que devo postar no domingo, se sobrar tempo! Se o plano de recriar a internet falhar, quem sabe eu vire marceneiro!
