It is of utmost importance to stay connected to the world and know what is happening around us and also in the more distant regions. This is because the impact of decisions, on a global scale, means that changes in international relations between two countries can affect the economy of a third place that "had no relation" to the event.
So, how can we seek to stay informed about current affairs?
Access to Information
One of the great revolutions of the digital age is the ease of access to information, which has become available to "everyone" at any time and through various mechanisms. Imagine that in the past there was only verbal communication, which then evolved to symbolic, and now we have virtual.

We can assume that all the information we want is available somewhere, requiring only our willingness to search for it. This requires time, which we often do not have, so we might prefer to access information organized by others, whom we trust for their selection (curation) skills. This brings up the first philosophical question: who do you trust?
My Data Sources
I have a selection of sources I work with daily to stay updated on the world, on topics of my interest, and at the depth of my interest. For this, I already know the paths to reach people or programs (journalistic entities with an editorial). I make a daily visit to some of them.
Among my sources are:
- Local newspaper: this mechanism keeps me in touch with the "millennium bug," it's old and out of fashion. I do not have a printed newspaper subscription, so I need to read in cafes or public places where this material is commonly available.
- Podcasts: A selection of podcasts is always at my disposal, and I regularly listen to all episodes that discuss the economy and politics in Brazil. Beyond these topics, I follow culture and education but sometimes skip episodes that are not crucial.
- Major media: The biggest advantage of following major media is that you know the information will arrive faster (only beaten by social media gossip). At the same time, another major advantage is knowing that the editorial stance is firmly grounded in a perspective that defends its own economic interests. You cannot be deceived about this aspect because you already know in advance that this is the rule of the game.
Unlike the local newspaper, where we have opinion articles from various individuals, often defending conflicting viewpoints, major media is homogeneous and clearly and directly advocates its interests. The outliers are presented to give a semblance of impartiality that is measured and has a very clear limit.
Knowing a lot does not mean being intelligent; intelligence is not just information, but also judgment, the way in which information is coordinated and utilized.

A long time ago, before the 2000s, probably in 1999 to be less dramatic, I had access to a text in digital form that left a significant impression on me, so much so that I still remember it. The text invoked the concept of sovereign computing, and it mentioned the issue of trust. I trust a friend who is very talented in computing but is terrible at playing soccer. Analogously, I trust certain people and institutions for specific topics. It's as if they have a certain competence to speak on that topic. And that's how I filter my sources.
The quoted statement from Carl Sagan, a renowned scientist, can be an example. He is someone I would trust for information related to astronomy. Simple as that!
Conclusion
The pursuit of truth cannot be the reason we inform ourselves, as reaching absolute truth is impossible. We need to be aware of as many perspectives and readings on the topics that interest us to have a panoramic view of the facts and thus take a stance that approaches the truth but is never truly it, as we will always be seeing from a single point of view.

É de suma importância estar sempre conectando no mundo e saber o que esta acontecendo ao nosso redor e também nas regiões mais afastadas. Isso porque o impacto das decisões, em uma escala global, faz com que mudanças nas relações internacionais entre dois países afetem a economia de um terceiro lugar que "não tinha qualquer relação" com o ocorrido.
Então, como podemos procurar nos interirar dos assuntos do momento?
Acesso à informação
Uma das grandes revoluções da era digital é a facilidade do acesso à informação, que passou estar à disposição de "todos" a qualquer tempo e por diferentes mecanismos. Imagine que antigamente havia apenas o modo verbal, que depois passou a ser simbólico, e agora temos o virtual.
Só existe opção quando se tem informação...
Ninguém pode dizer que é livre para tomar o sorvete que quiser se conhecer apenas o sabor limão.

Podemos supor que toda a informação que queremos está disponível em algum lugar, bastando apenas nossa vontade de procurar por ela. Isso exige tempo, que muitas vezes não temos, então podemos preferir acessar a informação organizada por outrem, em quem confiamos na capacidade de seleção (curadoria). Ai vem a primeira questão filosófica: em quem você confia?
Minhas fontes de dados
Eu tenho uma seleção de fontes com as quais trabalho diariamente visando me manter atualizado no mundo, nos assuntos de meu interesse e na profundidade do meu interesse. Para isso já conheço os caminhos para chegar nas pessoas ou programas (entidades jornalísticas que possuem um editorial). Faço uma visita diária em algumas delas.
Dentre as minhas fontes estão:
- Jornal local: esse mecanismo me mantém com o pé no "bug do milênio", é coisa antiga e caiu de moda. Não tenho assinatura de jornal impresso então preciso ler em cafeterias ou lugares públicos, onde é comum ter esse material disponível.
- Podcasts: Uma seleção de podcasts está sempre à minha disposição e tenho o costume de ouvir sempre todos os episódios que falam de economia e política no Brasil. Para além destes temas, acompanho cultura e educação porém algumas vezes pulo episódios que não são primordiais.
- Grande mídia: A maior vantagem de você acompanhar a grande mídia é saber que a informação chegará mais rápido (só perde para as fofocas de redes sociais). Ao mesmo tempo, outra grande vantagem é saber que o editorial está com os dois pés bem alicerçados sob um ponto de vista que defende seus próprios interesses econômicos. Você não pode ser enganado quanto a esse aspecto pois você sabe de antemão que é assim a regra do jogo.
Diferente do jornal local, onde temos artigos de opinião de um ou de outro cidadão, muitas vezes defendendo pontos de vista conflitantes, a grande mídia é homogênea e defende seu interesse de forma muito clara e direcionada. Os pontos fora da reta são colocados para trazer um ar de imparcialidade que é medido e tem um limite muito claro.
Saber muito não significa ser inteligente; a inteligência não é só informação, mas também julgamento, a maneira pela qual uma informação é coordenada e utilizada.

A muito tempo atrás, antes dos anos 2000, provavelmente em 1999 para ser menos dramático, tive acesso a um texto já em meio digital que me deixou muito marcado, tanto que estou lembrando dele. O texto invocava o conceito de computação soberana, e nele foi citado a questão de confiança. Eu confio em um amigo que tem muito talento em informática, mas é péssimo em jogar futebol. Analogamente, confio em algumas pessoas e instituições para um determinado assunto. É como se elas tivessem uma certa competência para falar de tal assunto. E assim faço meu filtro.
A frase citada, de Carl Sagan, um renomado cientista, pode ser um exemplo. É uma pessoa em quem em confiaria para informações relacionadas à astronomia. Simples assim!
Conclusão
A busca da verdade não pode ser o motivo pelo qual nos informamos, pois atingir a verdade absoluta é impossível. Precisamos tomar conhecimento do máximo de pontos e leituras sobre os assuntos que nos interessam para ter uma visão panorâmica dos fatos e assim tomar um posicionamento que se aproxima da verdade mas nunca o é, pois sempre estaremos vendo a partir de um ponto de vista único.

É preciso consultar diversas fontes, para se ter noção que uma noticia é realmente verdadeira ou apenas mais uma fake news. No passado essa pratica não era tão comum e as pessoas acreditavam cegamente, no que passava na televisão. Hoje até a verdade pode ser uma fake news, segundo a midia tradicional
Tem razão, eu mesmo pequei um tempo que a única fonte de informação da minha casa era o Jornal Nacional. Você deve saber do que estou falando. Isso é muita parcialidade, precisamos diversificar!

Back in the good old days like the 80's and 90's major new outlets tended to be neutral unlike today where they take a hard political side and try to skew all the news to fit their version of reality. When we invest a little time in mining these sources, we soon have a few options at hand and can alternate (in order to keep our time well spent) reading one, then another, and then another source about the current issues.
In other words, to stay a little up to date on everything and to be able to compare it with what the mainstream media publishes. Always have an "independent" opinion to compare and spot discrepancies that may indicate a bias towards one side or the other.
