EN-PT A new era of Enlightenment
The pandemic allowed us to relive something similar to what the Enlightenment was in past centuries — a true crusade revived by science to dismantle the primitive concepts that medieval society defended tooth and nail.
The Enlightenment, also known as the "Age of Enlightenment," was an intellectual and philosophical movement that flourished in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. It advocated the use of reason and scientific knowledge as tools to improve society and promote individual freedom, tolerance, and progress.
Something that once seemed unlikely is becoming increasingly necessary: defending logic, reason, and experimentation against beliefs and guesswork. Unfortunately, nowadays anyone can publish a book. Anyone — even someone who isn’t literate. It's possible to dictate content to a phone, which interprets the voice. Or worse: ask an artificial intelligence to do it.
A significant portion of the Brazilian population trusts vaccines. 72% of respondents in a survey conducted by the Institute of Social, Political and Economic Research (Ipespe) expressed confidence. But let’s focus on the 28% who don’t trust vaccines.
Looking at data breakdowns, we see:
- 39% of evangelicals don’t trust vaccines.
- 32% of those with low education levels don’t trust vaccines.
Curiously, the religious demographic is the most denialist. They reject science, reminiscent of the archaic duality between science and religion. Brazil has a Catholic majority, which wasn’t highlighted in the study.
During the pandemic, several conspiracy theories emerged as part of the anti-vaccine movement:
- "Vaccines alter human DNA"
Fake news: Claims that mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) would permanently alter human genetic code. This theory circulated when Pfizer’s vaccine was one of the only options in the Brazilian market.
- "Vaccines with microchips"
Fake news: Someone combined the idea of population control via microchip implants (which do exist) with the 5G signal that was being approved in Brazil. The narrative became that vaccines carried 5G chips. I wonder if it came with free internet LOL!
Ignorance is truly sad and impoverishes society.
- "Vaccines contain cells from aborted fetuses"
Fake news: Misinformation distorting the use of cell lines in laboratory research. I read a bit about it and found it complex to understand, but I had to trust people more knowledgeable in healthcare who explained it to me.
- "Vaccines are part of a global extermination plan"
Fake news: A conspiracy theory about population reduction promoted by governments or the “new world order.” This one came close to being true — but in reverse: lack of vaccines contributed to the extermination that reduced Brazil’s population by over 700,000 deaths.
- "Empty coffins"
Fake news: A conspiracy theory claiming that governments were faking COVID deaths to scare the population into taking the 5G chip vaccine. In Brazil, a probable collective delusion led denialists to storm hospitals because, according to them, there was no disease (COVID). Nor were there any deaths — it was all a hoax.

- "The vaccine turns people into alligators"
Fake news: A statement made by President Jair Bolsonaro, alluding to the idea that the vaccine could cause mutations. It was taken literally by denialists and became an international laughingstock.
Conclusion
There were many fake news stories that tried to weaken public confidence in vaccines. The effects are still measurable today, as Brazil has a rich history in vaccination campaigns, but public participation has declined over the past four years. There is data to support this — it’s not baseless.
It means that many people who were once hesitant or uninformed about how vaccines work ended up being convinced by fake news and now belong to the group that doesn’t trust their effectiveness.
A sad setback — for Brazil and the world.
A pandemia nos propiciou reviver algo semelhante ao que foi o iluminismo nos séculos passados. Uma verdadeira cruzada revivida pela ciência para desbravar os conceitos primitivos que a sociedade medieval defendia com unhas e dentes.
O Iluminismo, também conhecido como "Século das Luzes", foi um movimento intelectual e filosófico que floresceu na Europa durante os séculos XVII e XVIII. Ele defendia o uso da razão e do conhecimento científico como ferramentas para aprimorar a sociedade e promover a liberdade individual, a tolerância e o progresso.
Algo que parecia improvável tem se mostrado cada vez mais necessário: defender a lógica, a razão e a experimentação frente à crenças e achismos. Infelizmente nos dias de hoje qualquer pessoa pode publicar um livro. Qualquer pessoa mesmo, ainda que nem seja alfabetizada. É possível ditar o conteúdo para um celular, que interpreta a voz. Ou até pior: pedir que uma inteligência artificial faça.
Uma parcela significativa da população Brasileira confia nas vacinas. São 72% dos respondentes de uma pesquisa conduzida pelo Instituto de Pesquisas Sociais, Políticas e Econômicas (Ipespe). Mas vamos focar nos 28% que não confiam nas vacinas.
Observando os recortes dos dados, temos:
- 39% dos evangélicos não confiam nas vacinas.
- 32% daqueles com baixa escolaridade não confiam nas vacinas.
Curiosamente, o recorte religioso é o mais negacionista. Negam a ciência, tal qual a dualidade arcaica entre ciência e religião. O Brasil tem a maioria da população católica, que não foi citada no recorte da pesquisa.
Durante a pandemia, várias teorias surgiram como parte do movimento antivacina:
- "Vacinas alteram o DNA humano"
Fakenews: Foram alegações de que vacinas de mRNA (Pfizer e Moderna) modificariam permanentemente o código genético humano. Essa teoria circulou quando a vacina da Pfizer era uma das únicas opções no mercado nacional brasileiro.
- "Vacinas com microchip"
Fakenews: Alguem misturou a ideia de controle de população por microchips (implantes que existem realmente) com o sinal de 5G que estava em homologação no Brasil. A histórico ficou como que as vacinas teriam chip 5G. Eu me pergunto se viria com internet gratis LOL!
A ignorância é algo realmente triste e empobrece a sociedade.
- "Vacinas contêm células de fetos abortados"
Fakenews: Desinformação distorcendo o uso de linhas celulares em pesquisas laboratoriais. Eu fui ler algo a respeito disso e achei um pouco complicado de entender, mas precisei confiar no que pessoas mais preparadas na área da saúde me explicaram.
- "Vacinas fazem parte de um plano de extermínio global"
Fakenews: Teoria da conspiração sobre redução populacional promovida por governos ou pela "nova ordem mundial". Essa aqui chegou perto de acertar, só que ao contrário: a falta de vacina fez parte do plano de extermínio que reduziu a população brasileira: mais de 700 mil mortes.
- "Caixões vazios"
Fakenews: Teoria da conspiração de que governos estariam forjando mortes por COVID para assustar a população e incentivar a receberem a vacina com chip 5G. No Brasil, um provável delírio coletivo fez com que os negacionistas invadissem hospitais pois, segundo os delirantes, não havia doença (COVID). Tampouco haviam mortos, tudo era uma farsa.

- "Vacina transforma a pessoa em jacaré"
Fakenews: Alegação do presidente Jair Bolsonaro, fazia alusão ao fato de que a vacina poderá causar mutações na pessoa. Foi tomada de forma literal pelos negacionistas, o que virou motivo de chacota internacional.
Conclusão
Foram muitas as fakenews que tentaram fragilizar a confiança da população nas vacinas. Os efeitos são medidos até hoje, pois o Brasil tem uma farta história em campanhas de vacinação, e a participação da população decaiu nos últimos 4 anos. Existem dados para isso, não são afirmações infundadas.
Significa que muitas pessoas que tinham algum receio ou desconhecimento sobre o funcionamento das vacinas acabaram sendo convencidas pelas fakenews e agora estão no grupo dos que não confiam na sua eficácia.
Um triste retrocesso, para o Brasil e para o mundo.
