Would School Be Better Without Grades?

Hello Community,

So when I first heard about the idea of removing grades completely and just using pass or fail, it sounded kind of sweet, like imagine not having to stress over whether you got an A, B, or that painful C that just ruins your mood for the whole day, you just pass, you move, Simple, like there's no pressure, no overthinking, But the more I think about it, the more I realize it is not that straightforward, See, on one hand, a pass/fail system could actually help students mentally, A lot of people in school are not even learning again, they are just chasing grades, you will see someone reading all night, not because they want to understand anything, but because they just want to secure that “A.” And if they don’t get it, it feels like the end of the world, that kind of pressure is a lot, especially for younger students who are still trying to figure themselves out.

With pass/fail, that pressure reduces. You either understand enough to pass, or you don’t, it might even make learning feel more relaxed and less like a competition,Some students who usually feel not good enough because they are always getting lower grades might actually feel more confident, at least they passed, and that alone can boost morale, But here is where the issue starts, Life itself is not pass or fail, In reality, there are levels to everything, Two people can pass the same exam, but one clearly understands the work better than the other, so if everyone is just grouped into pass, how do we actually measure excellence? How do we know who is really putting in effort and who is just doing the bare minimum to get by?

Because let us be honest here, if students know that all they need is just to pass, a lot of people will relax too much, that extra push that makes someone go from average to excellent might disappear, and in the long run, that can affect growth, not everything should be about pressure, but a little challenge is actually necessary, Another thing is opportunities, When it comes to scholarships, jobs, or even internships, how do you differentiate people? Imagine two students applying for something, and both of them just have pass on their records, no breakdown, no detail, nothing, It becomes hard to know who truly stands out, and in a competitive world, that information actually matters.

I also think grades, as stressful as they can be, teach something important accountability, you see the result of your effort clearly, If you did not do well, you know. If you did well, you also know, that feedback helps you adjust and improve,With just pass/fail, that detailed feedback is missing.

That being said I still understand why people are considering this idea. Maybe of completely getting rid of grades ,there can be a balance, for example, we can reduce the pressure on grades, We can use both systems together like so you pass a course, you still get to see how well you did, That way students are not too stressed out. We can still see who is trying hard and doing a great job, at the end of the day I do not think just passing or failing is enough, It sounds good for our mental health but it might actually cause more problems.

Students do not just need to pass, they need to grow, and sometimes, that growth comes from knowing exactly where you stand, not just whether you made it or not.

Hmm you have a good point. Students might really get relaxed if they come to just pass / fail grading and truly there would be no competition

School is definitely not better without the letter grading format that helps them know the actual level of their performance and what they need to improve.

I love this, even if the pass or fail method will be used, it should till go together with the grading method as well. Because student won't even know which subject to our more effort in or not if the grading system is being scraped off...

Thanks for sharing.
