The Pleasures We Love but Know Aren't Good for Us

We humans are designed in similar ways. Out of every 100 people you meet, some will share experiences or thoughts similar to yours. Some things happen to you that may feel strange or unique, but you would be surprised how many others feel the same way.

Guilty pleasures are things we enjoy doing but feel embarrassed about, or feel we shouldn’t be doing.

In fact, while reading other people’s posts, I didn't see any dark guilty pleasures.

When it comes to darker guilty pleasures, some people find fun in flirting or hooking up with the opposite gender. You might think it is because they don’t have partners, but some are married and still do it.

Another example is masturbation. It feels good in the moment, but afterward, guilt sets in, and you promise to stop, only to do it again another day.

When I scroll through TikTok, I see many people commenting on how they just can’t seem to stop, no matter how hard they try. Some say they were able to quit for a few weeks, only to come back stronger. Some do it four times a day; it has become an addiction they can’t control.

As for me, I love that I’m not a smoker, and I don’t derive pleasure from losing control of my body with weed or other hard drugs. But that doesn’t mean I’m free of guilty pleasures, or from doing things I know I probably shouldn’t.

Here are some things I know I shouldn’t be doing, but I can’t stop myself from doing for one reason or another:

Late-night food: I know eating late at night leads to belly fat, because at night my body is mostly inactive, calories aren’t burned, and whatever I eat adds to my weight. Yet I can’t go without late-night snacking, mostly because I don’t sleep early.

Less sleep: I spend so much time working that I don’t even crave sleep. I want to keep working and earning. But our bodies aren’t designed that way. Sleep is like free medicine, yet many of us undervalue it. It has the power to repair both our body and brain.

I have managed to stop eating like a glutton, and it is already showing in my weight loss. If I can keep up this new habit, you might just see a new build soon, and I really hope I can stick with it

As for late-night food and sleep, I am not sure I can fully stop, but I am doing my best to limit them.

Health is wealth; anything we do or consume that harms our health should be stopped. Some consequences take time to show their ugly effects, which is why we shouldn’t get too comfortable with these habits, so they don’t catch us off guard later.
