The Good and Ugly Side of Stubbornness

Hello learners.

If there were an award for stubbornness, I would be given an A1 because my level of stubbornness is out of this world.

There are certain things I hate, and one of them is being controlled. If I planned to do something before, but somehow someone starts trying to force me to do it, I will no longer do it.

Why? Because I feel like the person is trying to push me into doing something I had already decided to do on my own, and I do not like that feeling.

There have been many times when I have been stubborn for good, bad, and even silly reasons.

A good example happened on the Hive platform.

I joined the Hive platform during the 2017 bull run. I was not the only Nigerian who joined; there were many of us. Unfortunately, the bull run did not last as we had imagined.

Fast-forward to 2018. The bear market crept in, and the payouts were no longer looking attractive. During that period, many Nigerians I knew abandoned the platform, but I stayed.

I kept pushing with a few others. Some even tried to demotivate me, but I remained stubborn and chose to stay.

Fast-forward to 2021, and fortune smiled on those of us who persevered. Some of those who had left tried to come back, but earning was no longer easy for them, and they had no liquid earnings to sell.

That was one of those times when my stubbornness paid off big time.

But when it comes to a time when my stubbornness made things worse...

Hmmm, that would be sometime in 2009.

I am a football lover. Back then, I could play football all day without getting tired. In fact, it was something I practiced regularly.

After playing football with the first group in the morning, a few of us would stay back and continue playing. We could keep playing until evening, when those who had left earlier would return and we would play another match.

The only thing we did during those hours was eat.

Then something happened.

I injured my toe and was told to refrain from playing football until the injury healed.

But silly me, I could not stand watching my friends play and enjoy themselves, so I decided to play anyway, risking my injured leg.

Unfortunately for me, while playing, one of the players bruised that same toe. The wound reopened and became worse.

Something that could have taken one or two weeks to heal ended up taking months, accompanied by fever.

When I finally healed, I still repeated the same mistake, although this time it was another part of my leg.

Injuries were almost a normal part of football back then.

Those were the days I miss so much now.

Looking back, I have learned that stubbornness itself is not necessarily bad.

Sometimes, you need to be stubborn enough to keep going when everyone else is giving up.

But sometimes, you also need to be wise enough to know when to stop.

Stubbornness can either keep you standing or keep you from walking away when you should.
