The Family Bond I Never Had

I grew up not seeing most of my aunts and uncles. I guess it is because I came into the family so late. I am the last born of my mummy, and my immediate brother is 9 years older than me. My mum did not plan to have me; I was a mistake, a very stubborn one that refused to be corrected.

My sisters told me about how they used to visit their maternal grandmother and how much fun it was in the village, with bush meat and fruits for them to eat. Those were the moments that those in the villages are enjoying good life and fresh food...

My dad lost both of his parents at an early age, so there was no grandma or grandpa to visit on his side. He also has only one brother, one sister and one stepsister, I am not sure I get the numbers correctly but those are the one I am sure of and it does not look like they were very close because the only time I saw them was during my sister's wedding. Once, and that was it. I cannot even remember his stepsister again, but for his brother and sister, I do see the brother's picture and the sister live close to him now...

So, the kind of family I grew up in and the time I arrived on planet Earth did not really give me the chance to vibe with uncles and aunts. You can say I am only familiar and close with my siblings.

The reason why I am also not close to my mum's siblings is because of distance and, most importantly, because they are mummies and daddies to me.

So, I grew up only bonding with my siblings.

Do I want this life for my children? Not really.

Because I am an uncle to my siblings' children, and the bond is strong. I am glad to have loving siblings who cherish the blood bond, and I am sure that even in my absence, they will take care of my children.

So, this is not even something I can stop. My son already has uncles and aunts who are his big mummies and daddies. Remember, they are all far older than me, and they are nice to him.

I would like it to continue that way. It is a good thing to bond with extended family.

Going forward, my child will have a good bond with his uncles, aunts, and cousins because we are one big family.

And most importantly, I want him to grow up knowing that family is not just about the people you live with. It is also about the people who show up for you, love you, and have your back.

I'm not close to my relatives either. If you're lucky you get a super supportive extended family. However, in reality, most families are distant with one another to a certain extent.

You are right, I believe the distance contribute to this more.. cos most time the families live in different states...and also nuclear family can never be compared to extended...the closeness is always more in nuclear family...
