One of the things I fear the most right now is hospital bills, so I practice prevention more these days because prevention is less expensive than a cure…

The last time I was in the hospital was when my child was sick. Immediately his mum got to the hospital, and he was diagnosed, she was asked to deposit a sum of 40,000 naira before he could be admitted. I got the call, and the news was exactly what I feared. I had no choice but to send the money immediately because my child’s life is priceless. Even if it meant borrowing, I would!
One good thing about this particular hospital that asked for a 40k deposit before admission was that when they first got there, the doctor attended to my boy immediately. He was running a very high fever, and they gave him injections to stabilize him first, at least to take him out of the critical stage, because if nothing had been done immediately, only God knows what could have happened…
So they did well. They saved my boy first, then asked for payment to continue treatment. That is something every hospital should be doing…
I have heard about cases where people were rushed to the hospital in critical conditions involving life and death, yet the hospital refused to treat or admit them unless a certain amount was paid first… should we blame the hospitals???
Honestly, this situation can be compared to lending people money…
The way some people switch up can be very crazy. At one point, they become emotional and look so pitiful when they need help, but the moment they get that help, and it is time to fulfill their promise, they suddenly become a different person…

A doctor once told a story that made him heartless when it comes to patients. Like every hospital, the one he worked for always asked for payment before treatment.
One day, a pregnant woman in labour was rushed in. Her husband was with her. They were asked to make a deposit, but the husband said he had no money and begged them to attend to his wife first while he looked for a way to get the money. The nurses on duty refused, and both the husband and wife kept begging.
The doctor on duty took pity on them and instructed the nurses to admit her. He attended to the woman, she delivered safely, and after she gave birth, she called her husband to tell him the good news…
That was the last time anyone saw the husband.
He never came back to the hospital after that night. The woman kept eating hospital food while the bills kept piling up, yet no one showed up for her.
After a week, the doctor instructed them to discharge her. Since he was the one who ordered her admission without payment, the bill was deducted from his salary.
That day taught him a hard lesson: always follow protocol and never pity anyone too much because if he had insisted on payment first, they would have found the money somehow, even if it meant calling their enemies…
The saddest part was that five months later, he saw the woman, her husband, and their newborn baby at a mall shopping together…
The same husband who disappeared from the hospital.
At that moment, he became convinced that his wife knew about everything too. Since then, he lost his soft heart when it comes to patients.
When I heard the story, I also understood why hospital staff strictly follow protocol because people can truly be wicked…
The bad ones often deprive the good ones of kindness.
But it is what it is…
We can do better as humans.
