Should Users Pay for Damage Caused by Self-Driving Cars

One thing our generation should be grateful for is technology; it has made a lot of things much easier for us.

Yesterday, I sent someone on an errand to get some things for me at the market, and when she got there, the prices on the list I gave her were different. She had to call me several times to confirm whether she should still buy them or not. If it were in the time of our forefathers, that wouldn’t have been possible because they had no phones.

Also, transportation wasn’t as developed back then. Their means of movement was mainly by animals, and not everyone could afford them; only the wealthy had that privilege. It would have been very inconvenient to communicate or move around.

But now, things are much easier with just a little token and access to technology.

Based on my research, self-driving cars already exist. They are just limited to certain places and are not yet widely used. I believe they are already being tested in countries like China, although not on all roads.

In my opinion, it’s only a matter of time before they become more common, since the technology already exists; it just needs time for people and systems to fully adapt.

Now, back to the question: would I support self-driving cars, or see myself using one someday?

My honest answer is no, and the country I come from has a big influence on that opinion.

Most of our roads are not in good condition, and many drivers are reckless. Anything can happen on the road here.

Just tonight, on my way back from school, one lane was blocked because the road was being graded. So all vehicles had to share the remaining lane. It was supposed to be managed as a two-way flow between incoming and outgoing cars, but some impatient drivers disrupted everything and turned it into a three-way struggle. The result was heavy traffic, and I ended up spending an extra two hours on the road when I should have already been home resting.

Situations like this make me feel that self-driving cars might struggle in environments like ours, at least for now.

Now imagine I was in a self-driving car. The system might assume that other drivers are sensible and act accordingly, which could result in a fatal accident. But if I am the one driving myself, I believe I will know to expect the unexpected from those reckless drivers and be able to protect myself from any accident that may arise from their behavior.

In terms of damage to cars in self-driving situations, I believe the company that produces the cars should be responsible for handling it. Why should I pay for damage caused by something you created? It wasn’t my fault, and I shouldn’t have to pay for something I did not do.
