Sharing Love, sharing bills: The role of Equity in Marriage

Gender Equality and Equity is one of the most controversial topics that never seems to have an end between the two genders.

People often mistake Equality and Equity, so before I dig into the Hive learner prompt, I would love to explain both.

Equality is when both genders are given the same treatment. A good example of this is when Burl and Nkem apply for a job in a construction company. The employer decides to put us both in the heavy lifting of building materials, knowing well that Nkem, being a woman, might not have the strength to do it.

Equity is when the employer puts Burl in lifting heavy materials and puts Nkem in either the reception or accounting sector. We can say that it is fair enough since Burl has the strength to carry heavy things, while Nkem, who doesn't have the strength, can be in a position that does not require such...This is just my example, and there are more examples that can be used to differentiate Equity and Equality, but the main thing is that Equity deals with fairness, and Equality deals with treating both the same way.

I do not think Gender Equity will work in marriage in my part of the country because the ladies believe it is the responsibility of the man to take care of them, while their own money belongs to them alone.

There was a story I heard about a woman who lost her son to illness because the father could not afford the hospital bills only for the husband to discover weeks later that his wife had millions in her accounts and when he confronted her about it, her statement was that he thought the man was going to get the money and it was not her responsibility to pay the hospital bills, imagine losing your son because you feel only your husband must pay for the treatment.

If we were to practice Equity, which is fairness, it means that if a woman is richer than her husband or earns more, she could pay the rent while the husband covers little bills since she earns more but I doubt my country people would want to do this since they believed and have the mindset that the man must do everything including paying rent, buying groceries and also paying for their hair and clothes even though they can afford it but as their saying, men's money taste sweeter

Equity is when if the lady earns more than the man, she can also be the one to foot their wedding bills since she is richer, but again, that is rare, or should I say impossible, in my part of the country.

Equity is what men will love to practice as it will take some of the responsibility of being the sole provider off their heads, but I doubt the female gender will like it because they have a lot to lose, like their money, which they dislike spending on men lol.

If it were possible to practice Equity in marriage and some loads are taken off the men's heads, they would also do their part by sharing the housework with their wives.
