It was fun to see my dad handling the electrical aspect of our house whenever he was around. At first, I did not know what his work was. I just knew that whenever he was around, we did not have any problems with electricity.

There were days when there was low current on a particular line. He would go outside, get a long stick, and somehow run a wire to tap electricity from the second line. Then, we would also have high current like some other houses. By this time, I already knew that my dad was an electrician who worked for the government, so it was no longer surprising.
Unlike me, who hates anything that has to do with tampering with electricity, once bitten, twice shy. While growing up, I had horrible experiences with electricity. There was a time I put an iron spoon into a socket, and it shocked me badly. All those little experiences made me fear electricity, and the tragic experience of an electrician who went to fix electricity for his client and got electrocuted on a pole made it worse. Imagine, if a professional can be electrocuted, what will happen to a noob like me?
But aside from electricity, I am not useless. There are things I can do by myself without having to pay someone to do them for me.

One of those things is cutting the grass and weeds in my compound. Normally, people would wait for the compound to become so bushy and then call someone to clear it for them. However, I know that will cost me money, so instead of waiting until it becomes bushy, I cut and clear the compound every few days. That has been helpful in keeping my surroundings clean and safe from snakes and the likes.
Another incident I remember from my stay in Lagos was when a woman approached me, saying she did laundry for people in case I had clothes I wanted to wash. I told her I did not need her services because I could wash my clothes by myself. At that time, I did not have a washing machine, but I just could not seem to see a good reason to give my clothes to someone to wash for me at a certain price when I had my two hands intact.
I used to wash my clothes by myself on certain weekends until I eventually got myself a washing machine, which has made things much easier for me now.
While growing up, my mum taught me how to sew clothes. I do not mean sewing a complete outfit, but simple things like patching up torn clothes. This is another thing I can do by myself, but unfortunately, I do not have a sewing machine, so I still have to go out to get whatever needs patching done.
These are the little things that save me money, and I am proud of myself.
