Justice for Victims, Not Just Mercy for Criminals
It is easy for someone who has never been hurt by criminals to pity them when they are apprehended and being punished, either by law or through jungle justice.
But for someone who has felt the pain or been a victim of criminals, they will feel the urge to take revenge on someone caught committing the same crime.
Here in my country, there has been a lot of burglary going on. Someone will sleep with millions of naira worth of goods in their shop and wake up to find nothing because some thieves broke into their shop and carted away all their goods.
They end up ruining some of these people because some used all their life savings, some took loans to start their businesses and are yet to repay their debts, and some have no other means of income. Yet, their lives are destroyed in a day.
Imagine the victims of such occurrences being present when a thief is caught. Imagine the aggressiveness and thirst for blood that would surge through their bodies because they just want to eradicate such evil people from the world.
Most people do not like it when criminals are taken to the police station because they know the police are corrupt and anyone can be released as long as they have money for a bribe.
But let us assume the police are doing their work well. Why the heck should criminals be rehabilitated instead of being punished for their crimes?
Something similar happened. We have bandits in my country who commit all sorts of criminal acts, from killing citizens to raping children. The government came out to say that some of them had been apprehended, and rather than hang them, they said they had been taken to a rehabilitation centre. You need to see how pissed I was while reading the news.
Some crimes deserve punishment, not rehabilitation. Crimes for which I feel rehabilitation can be a way to help include drug addiction or lesser crimes like that. But when it comes to murderers, rapists, and other people who commit gruesome crimes, they should be punished!
We need to put into consideration the victims who were affected, the lives these criminals have ruined, and the trauma they have inflicted on children, which could affect them for a long time, if not forever. All these are things that should not be ignored and are reasons why they should be punished severely for their crimes.
At the end of the day, if criminals know they can commit terrible crimes and still receive another chance without facing serious consequences, what message are we sending to the next person considering committing the same crime? We may be telling them that the risks are worth taking and that the suffering of their victims does not matter.
