Choosing Leaders, Shaping a Nation

During every election, we are told that every vote counts. But many Nigerians struggle to believe that, because of how our elections have played out over the years.

A lot of people feel their votes are made meaningless when, in the end, the candidate they strongly supported doesn’t emerge victorious. During the last election, many people supported Peter Obi, yet Mr. Bola Tinubu became president.

I am not fully convinced that our votes don’t count. It is possible that many of those campaigning online were just keyboard warriors who never showed up to vote. The next election will help determine whether our votes truly matter or not.

There is hardship in the country, and even some people who supported the current government have become disappointed with how things have turned out. At the same time, many young people don’t even have voter cards. When you ask them why, they often say they are too lazy to register or don’t believe voting will change anything.

But if voter turnout increases significantly and the outcome still feels disconnected from the people’s will, it will only deepen the belief that elections are not fair.

Honestly, I don’t even know who I will vote for in the next election, but I know I want change in the country. I wish we could have younger leaders in power. The world has changed, and leadership should evolve with it. It feels strange to have still very old people running a country that demands modern thinking and energy.

Age alone doesn’t define leadership, but the job requires strength, clear thinking, and the ability to respond to today’s challenges.

Beyond elections, the insecurity in the country is also deeply worrying. Bandits are kidnapping, molesting, and killing citizens, yet the government seems unable to protect its people fully. There are even rumors and suspicions about government involvement, but what is clear is that the situation has gone on for too long with little visible solution.

Some terrorists who were apprehended were later released and even given money to start life afresh. It raises serious questions about justice and accountability, and it only adds to people’s frustration and fear.

Anyway, I honestly don’t think there is a future for my country. The situation feels like it keeps getting worse, worse to the extent that people can't even afford foodstuffs and basic needs, and it is hard to see real change happening anytime soon.

All we can do is hope that our votes will count in the coming election, so we can remove the bad ruler, and that we will vote for the right person who has the best interests of the country at heart. God bless Nigeria.
