Smarter Phones, Weaker Habits? A Reflection on Digital Dependency

Nowadays, we all use mobile phones in great quantity. You would hardly have seen a person these days who is not busy with their mobile or any electronic device in their free time. Very few people read books in their free time or focus on their hobbies. Some of us do this too. It would be wrong to say that everyone just keeps looking at their phones, but mostly, wherever you see a person, free of cost, everyone are seen using their phones. Most of the time, they are found sitting in the bus or on Facebook, on Instagram or watching YouTube shots. To be honest, time passes so quickly in all these things, and we do not even realise it. See, all the applications made here are designed in such a way that no matter how much time you spend here, you do not even realise the time. In such a situation, the company that runs it also gets profit, and you do not get any kind of profit. Well, we all have become addicted to the phone and if we have a phone or we are using it, then we start feeling a restlessness from within, this happens to me sometimes, but I don't call myself an addict of the phone, so maybe I am being rude to myself.

To be honest, my day starts with the phone and my day ends too, sorry, even my night ends with the phone. I wake up in the morning and first check my notifications, and at night I go to sleep after listening to a video or audio. So I am fully dependent, and whatever time I have, I spend it on my laptop. When I go to the office, while working, I keep some podcast or song or something else playing on my mobile phone and listen to it with earphones. This way, time passes, and you are not disturbed. Everything has its advantages as well as disadvantages. If you are utilising your phone for some good work, then it is a good thing. Like, whenever I have free time, I comment on people's posts on Hive or do some curate work. Most of my free time goes like this, or sometimes I have a little conversation with someone.

If we talk about leaving the phone, then when I sleep. That is only time I guess, which is an odd thing, and sometimes when I read a book or do exercise, I keep the phone away. Slowly, I am trying to improve the habit of not checking my phone as soon as I wake up in the morning. This will be a very good habit. If I can follow this routine, then it is not impossible to do this, but you can do anything if you want. Some time ago, when I was preparing for exams, I had stopped using the smartphone because, according to me, smartphone = a waste of time if you are not doing anything good by using it.

Earlier the internet was also limited, so people used to use smartphones sparingly, mostly they used to download and watch the news but now internet is available for free, Wi-Fi is installed everywhere and a lot of internet is available in mobile phones too, due to which our dependency on smartphones and smart devices has increased a lot. And in such a situation it becomes very difficult to leave all these things suddenly, if I talk about myself, then I can stay without a phone for only about two to three hours, if I am doing some work, then whenever I am busy, mostly on Saturdays and Sundays I use my mobile phone very little because at that time I am busy with household chores, due to which I do not have the time to use my phone and do other works.

Earlier, my screen time used to be more, but now I am gradually reducing my screen time. It is not that I have stopped using them completely, because most of my work is done through smart devices, due to which I have to work on them all the time, whether in the office or after coming home. It is not that easy to give up all these habits completely, but I try to use them as little as possible, like I wake up in the morning and exercise for some time and have started reading books for some time at night before going to bed. I think this will have some impact on my life; the rest is what happens. I believe that you can get away from any kind of addiction, you just have to adopt a habit to give up that addiction, and you can utilise that time of yours.

We've all become so dependent on our phones to the point that it deprived us of enough time to spend on other activities.

Just like you, I'm working towards living a healthier lifestyle of the screen.

I still find it hard to not check on my phone as soon as I wake up. I know I am not expecting anything important as I am not important person, beside notification from ecency, but the temptation is too hard to resist.
I am so happy that you could already reduce it, so awesome my friend

We can't deny the dependency of smartphones because day by day it's getting more useful to us and we need to use it more. But we also need to be concerned about our health. In this digital world reduce the screen time on smartphone is hard because we became used to with it. But I feel as long as we use it productively, it's not a waste.
