Well, I’m not saying I’m obsessed with Texel, but I’m writing this at 2 a.m. with a hot cocoa in one hand and a half-edited Lightroom catalog open, so you tell me. Last October, me and my partner-in-crime (a.k.a. my Canon R5 and a bag of RF lenses, oh, and wife and kids too!) hit up Texel, one of those Dutch Wadden Islands that sounds like it should be chill but ends up rewiring your brain. If you think a tiny island can’t slap you in the face with beauty, you’re probably still shooting in auto mode. No shade. Okay, some shade.
Texel’s got more sheep than Wi-Fi networks in an average Antwerp apartment. They’re everywhere, staring at you like you owe them money, photobombed my shots, and one definitely side-eyed my tripod setup. I swear I heard one mutter, “Meh-Amateur.” It’s like Middle Earth, but with better cheese and fewer hobbits.
The Eierland Lighthouse? It’s not just a building; it’s a damn mood. Red, towering, spinning that “don’t crash, sailor” beam like it’s auditioning for some thriller movie. I went back every day like a junkie chasing a fix. Foggy mornings? Brooding vibes. Golden hour? My SD card wept. Blue hour? I nearly proposed to the thing.
Canon EOS R5: My baby. It’s like having a superpower, except it’s just stupidly good at capturing light.
RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM: Wide-angle perfection for dunes and dramatic skies. Dave the Mutton photobombed again. Screw you, Dave.
RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM: Makes the lighthouse pop against Texel’s wild clouds. Telephoto compression? Chef’s kiss!
RF800mm f/11 IS STM: Overkill? Maybe. But sniping the lighthouse from a mile away felt like I was in a heist movie. And it delivers great result. So no overkill at all!
Pro tip: Blue hour + tripod + that lighthouse beam = straight-up magic. Just don’t trip over a sheep while you’re at it. I speak from experience.
There’s this beach café, can’t remember the name though. It’s got these warm lights glowing against a sunset that looks like the sky’s on fire. I got a silhouette shot of the place that’s so warm I almost cried. Texel doesn’t just give you views, it hands you a whole damn aesthetic.
I went to Texel expecting cute and quiet. I left with 2TB of photos, an even more intense lighthouse obsession, and a weird urge to move there and live in a windmill. If you’re a photographer, a wanderer, or just someone who needs their soul shaken, Texel’s your spot. Pack your gear, charge your batteries, and maybe bring a snack for the sheep. They’re judgy, but they’re not wrong.
TL;DR: Texel’s got sheep, a lighthouse that’ll make you question your life choices, and enough photo ops to fill your hard drive. Ditch the excuses, grab your camera, and go. You’re welcome. 😎📸
