Right! Rain. That lovely Belgian weather phenomenon that appears roughly 6.5 days a week. The remaining half-day? It's just the sky practicing for its next emotional breakdown. Belgium doesn’t really do seasons, it just has varying levels of soggy.
But before you throw your camera into a dry cabinet for the 47th day in a row, hear me out. There is a silver lining to this perpetual drizzle… and no, it's not the momentary glimpse of sun we all hallucinate on day four of the rain cycle. It's macro photography. Yep, the kind that turns a boring old droplet into a masterpiece of nature's geometry.
Armed with my Canon R5 and the trusty EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro (still an absolute beast), I ventured out during one of those rare in-between rain pauses. You know the ones—where everything is wet, but the rain’s taking a smoke break.
And that’s the golden window, my friend. With a little bit of light breaking through and those leaves still glistening like a nature-made mirror maze, the macro game goes into full-on magic mode. The results?
There’s something incredibly therapeutic about shooting macro in wet conditions. Everything slows down. You’re not chasing golden hour. You’re crouching, you’re focusing, you’re inhaling that very fresh, slightly muddy forest smell. You’re seeing things most people walk right past. And when that perfect droplet reflects a mini forest, a flower, or your confused face squinting through the viewfinder, chef’s kiss.
So yeah, rain sucks… until you shrink your world down to a few centimeters. Then suddenly, every drop becomes a lens, every branch a canvas. You don’t need blue skies. You just need a macro lens, a bit of patience, and a tolerance for wet knees and awkward crouches.
Macro lovers, don't pack it in when the skies open up, gear up, get out, and embrace the drizzle. Because sometimes, beauty hides in the droplets.

Que belleza
Exactly what you said, going close-up when it's cloudy and rainy is exactly what I do too! Colors pop wondefully well also, as you know! While it's not my favorite photographic conditions, I've certainly learned to make it work! Gorgeous shots, @borniet! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
